Since 2008, it has built a steady reputation among vinyl collectors, tape hunters, music fans, and people who simply like spending time in a real neighborhood shop. With a 4.6 rating from hundreds of reviews, the store is known for carrying a focused, personality-filled selection rather than feeling like a generic music retailer. For anyone searching for a record store in Oakland with character, history, and a strong independent-music point of view, this is a place worth knowing.

The shop is especially associated with punk, indie, garage, hardcore, vinyl, and tapes, making it a natural stop for listeners who care about underground scenes and physical formats. Customers also mention an unusually large selection of Japanese records, which adds another reason to browse slowly and stay curious. Whether you are looking for a Record Store Day release, a limited pressing, a new discovery, or a familiar favorite, 1-2-3-4 Go! Records offers the kind of digging experience that makes record shopping feel personal. The inventory feels suited to collectors, musicians, DJs, and casual fans who enjoy finding something they did not expect.

The atmosphere is a major part of the appeal. Reviewers describe the space as beautiful, cool, and easy to hang out in, with listening parties that bring people together around albums and shared taste. Families, longtime collectors, and out-of-town visitors have all found reasons to enjoy the shop, whether they are attending an event, browsing the bins, or stopping in because the storefront looked inviting. Like many independent stores, the experience can depend on timing and staff interaction, and a few customers have mentioned less-than-warm service. Still, many others point to lovely customer service, quick shipping, fair pricing, and careful packaging, especially for online or special purchases.

For local shoppers in Oakland, CA, the hours are convenient and consistent: noon to 7:00 PM Monday through Friday, and 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. That makes 1-2-3-4 Go! Records easy to fit into a lunch break, weekend outing, or dedicated vinyl hunt. Its address at 420 40th St #5 places it in a walkable part of Oakland where a record-store stop can become part of a larger neighborhood visit. The store works well for people who enjoy browsing without rushing, comparing pressings, asking about new arrivals, or simply being surrounded by music culture.

At its best, 1-2-3-4 Go! Records feels like more than a shop; it feels like a local music hub with a clear identity. It is a strong fit for punk and indie fans, collectors chasing harder-to-find releases, tape enthusiasts, families attending listening events, and anyone who still values the ritual of flipping through records by hand. In a city with deep creative energy, this record store in Oakland, CA offers a grounded, authentic place to discover music, support independent retail, and connect with the culture around physical media.

I was here on listening party of Boards of Canada "Inferno" album. Nice record store, in (tough) business since 2008, and that means something. Even it's specializing on punk, indie, garage, hardcore vinyl and tapes, and, to my surprise, biggest selection of Japanese records what I've ever saw, they also have some electronics records scattered here and there. Support your local businesses!

Amazing record store, but bad customer service. The short latina cashier/staff lady is very rude with a bad attitude (saw there’s a previous review about her as well). I was here for a listening party and she killed the vibe with her snarky attitude.

I went into this store yesterday because it looked really nice and seemed to have a great selection. I picked out several records, and just as I was about to finish, I repeatedly heard the only employee there saying they were about to close. There were no more than six people in the store, and all of us were already lined up to pay. The cashier kept getting increasingly rude and started shouting, “I’m about to close, line up to pay or leave.” I was already in line to pay, and my girlfriend was standing next to me, browsing records while she waited for me to check out. At that point, the cashier turned to her and, in one of the rudest tones I’ve ever heard, said, “If you’re not going to buy anything, get out.” Unfortunately, I had already paid for three records totaling over $100—otherwise I would have left immediately without them. In fact, I want to return them because of how aggressive and rude her behavior was. I have never been treated that way anywhere. To make matters worse, after literally forcing my girlfriend out of the store, the cashier, with an indignant expression, said to me, “People don’t understand that I’m about to close.” The service was unacceptable, and I will never return to this store. I strongly do not recommend visiting. It’s honestly disappointing and very unfortunate to experience such poor service and customer care.
