Customer feedback frequently associates Buslab with Volkswagen vans, particularly VW Vanagons. Several reviewers describe long-term relationships with the shop and value its experience keeping older vans roadworthy. One customer specifically calls the team expert VW Vanagon technicians, while another notes trusting the shop with a van after handling much of their own car work over the years. For owners of an older Volkswagen van, that kind of specialized familiarity may be an important factor when choosing a Berkeley auto repair shop.
The service experience described in positive reviews feels personal and relationship-focused. Customers mention receiving advice when they needed it and feeling that their concerns mattered, with individual team members remembered by name. That feedback suggests Buslab may be a good fit for VW van owners who appreciate direct conversations about their vehicle and want to build an ongoing connection with a local repair team. It may also appeal to drivers maintaining high-mileage or long-owned vehicles that need attentive, knowledgeable care rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Reviews also show that repair experiences can vary, including concerns from some customers about charges, recommended work, and results after service. As with any automotive repair decision, it is sensible to discuss the specific concern, requested work, estimate, timeline, and any recommended additional repairs before authorizing service. Clear communication can help owners understand their options and make decisions that fit their vehicle's condition and budget. For Berkeley, CA drivers seeking a shop with a notable connection to VW van service, Buslab offers a local option worth considering during its Monday-through-Thursday hours.

Sign in to reviewIt makes me sad to write this review. I am a big VW guy and really wanted to love this sadly, I was very disappointed. They charged my $450 for a carburetor adjustment. Claimed it took 2 1/2 hours. On my drive home, the car broke down and I had to pay to tow it back to the shop. Then, they got defensive and claimed it wasn't their problem and told me that I my carbs were bad and my engine was bad. I agreed to upgrade the carbs for another $1500. I called a couple days later to check on the car and asked that they please call me if the price was going to be higher than $1500. I got a call back saying that they no longe want to work on my car and I need to pay to have it towed somewhere else. The new mechanic found the problem right away and it had nothing to do with the carbs. It was the ignition coil. $40 later, I was back on the road and the car has been running great ever since. The shop did return my money, which I appreciated and it why I am going to 2 stars and not 1. These guys seem to know fuel injected Vanagons, but I would find someone else for your aircooled VW.
I'm a guy that has worked on cars all my life. With very rare exceptions, I've kept that habit going for every vehicle I've ever owned from oil changes to clutches to rebuilding engines. So it took a leap of faith for me to have the guys at Buslab work on my van, but sometimes ya gotta know when it's smart to pay for professional help. The whole process was transparent, the communication was great and the finished product was first rate. These guys have you covered!
Dishonest ..took my car there for a tune up ..got told I also needed to spend another $4k on new breaks .. when I dropped it off it had working breaks ..when I picked it up they were non existent.. had it towed to another shop .who told me half the stuff I was told was needed wasn't. It ended up costing me $800 at another shop . Will not go back . They actually have a lot of negative reviews over many sites saying the same thing ..over charging for work that's not needed .And on top of that my car is running worse than before! after spending $1k on a tune up ( which also is extremely expensive) ..but i refuse to take it back there out of principle. I'll try the other vw shop in Berkeley . To add insult to injury .the car just broke down on me littery after driving it less than 5 miles
The Buslab are Expert vw vanagon technicians and good people They have helped me for 20 years keeping my 40 year old van with over 400,000 miles road worthy
