Caning Shop is a distinctive craft store in Berkeley, California, where traditional handwork, practical repair knowledge, and materials for creative projects meet in one local space. At 926 Gilman St at Eighth St, Berkeley, CA 94710, it is a destination for people interested in cane work, basket making, and the careful techniques associated with furniture restoration. The shop feels less like a standard retail stop and more like a place to slow down, look closely, and learn how useful objects can be repaired or made with care. Its setting near the Gilman Street and Eighth Street intersection makes it easy to identify for local visitors planning a dedicated craft errand.
Customers come to Caning Shop for basket-making supplies and other craft goods, as well as finished items that give the space a museum-like sense of accumulated skill. A central specialty is chair caning: visitors can inquire about having a chair caned again, including recaning projects such as canoe seats mentioned in customer feedback. The focus on traditional restoration makes the Berkeley craft store especially relevant for someone trying to extend the life of a well-used piece instead of replacing it. Whether the goal is a small supply pickup or a more involved repair question, the inventory and expertise support hands-on work. Finished goods can also provide inspiration about designs, materials, and the level of detail involved.
The atmosphere is personal, unhurried, and rich with the details of an almost-lost craft. Reviews describe Jim and George as generous with their knowledge, offering advice about care, answering questions, and sometimes turning a brief errand into a learning experience. One customer recalled getting help with a baby doll basket handle while learning about gourds; another spent time learning to recane canoe seats independently. These experiences suggest Caning Shop is well suited to curious beginners, dedicated makers, and owners of cane furniture who value patient guidance. Visitors should allow a little time for conversation, stories, and the close attention that this type of work invites.
With a 4.8 rating from 72 reviews, Caning Shop has earned appreciation for its craft knowledge and neighborly approach. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM; it is closed Monday and Sunday. For Berkeley, CA residents and East Bay visitors seeking basket materials, craft supplies, finished goods, or advice about cane chair repair, this Gilman Street shop offers a tangible connection to traditional making. It is a practical place to bring a question, find materials, and better understand the work behind a repaired object.

Sign in to reviewJim is an absolutely wonderful human being. He kept his shop open late on a Friday night in order to help me repair a handle on a baby doll basket. He repaired it for free and while he worked he taught me so many things about gourds. Thank you so much Jim for your help, expertise, knowledge and humanity :) I appreciate it so much
It’s like walking through a time machine to see all the detail and care to almost lost art of furniture restoration and cane chair fixing. The guys that run the store are sweet. And you just gotta be a little patient. But they’ll tell you a good story and give you great advice on how to care for your items and projects. There are weaving and sewing classes there. Overall would recommend.
We buy basket making supplies and other craft goods. They have lots of finish products so it’s a little bit like a Museum. you can Get your chair caned again.
I stopped by today just to pick up a couple of supplies. I ended with everything I need and then some! Jim was such a wealth of knowledge and encouragement. His joy for his craft was contagious. I had such a pleasant trip to this shop, I’m definitely looking forward to returning! A quick stop turned into truly one of my most joyful shopping experiences of my life! Thanks Jim!
Incredible little local shop. 3 years ago, I stopped by to ask about getting some canoe seats re-caned. Ended up spending 2 hours learning how to do it from George instead and walked out with a new skill that allowed me to do it myself - saved some money and got a fun project out of it. Went in again today with the seats from a different canoe to get some materials and a refresher on the method and they were just as helpful and friendly as the last time. Great to see local businesses like this one are still around.
