Fellow's Auto Repair is an auto repair shop on University Avenue in Berkeley, California, serving drivers who need practical help with everyday vehicle concerns, inspections, and emissions-related work. Located at 1790 University Ave, Berkeley, CA 94703, the shop is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, making it a weekday option for local residents, commuters, and visitors who need to get a car back on the road. Its University Avenue location can also be convenient for arranging service during a regular workday.

The available customer feedback points to smog testing and emissions repair work for vintage Volkswagens, including a 1990 VW Vanagon and a 1978 VW camper bus. In one review, a driver says the team completed a smog test and uploaded the result to the DMV within an hour. Another recalls that the shop addressed an engine issue that helped a vintage camper bus pass smog. These experiences suggest a useful local option for owners navigating California emissions requirements, particularly when older vehicles need attentive diagnosis. For drivers whose testing situation involves an older vehicle, these detailed reports are especially relevant.

For shoppers considering a used car, Fellow's Auto Repair has also received feedback about pre-purchase inspections described as quick, precise, and honest. A traveler from outside Berkeley reported bringing in a vehicle with a knocking sound; according to that review, the issue was identified and the car was repaired in one day at a reasonable price. Those details make the shop relevant for drivers who want a second opinion before buying, as well as people dealing with a specific mechanical concern rather than routine maintenance alone. This type of feedback can be useful when the goal is to understand a vehicle's condition before committing to a purchase.

The overall rating is 3.9 out of 5 from 58 reviews, so it is sensible to discuss scope, timing, and estimated costs before work begins, especially for emissions repair. The review set includes strong recommendations as well as a critical account of service experience and costs. Since individual repair needs and vehicle condition differ, a direct conversation is the most reliable way to understand the available options and make an informed decision for a particular vehicle.

Customer reviews do not provide a detailed description of the physical atmosphere. They focus instead on the working experience: phone calls, prompt diagnostics, smog testing, repairs, and clear results. This makes it a consideration for drivers in Berkeley, CA, who need practical assistance with an older vehicle, a pre-purchase inspection, or a specific repair concern. Calling ahead to discuss vehicle needs, confirm the scope of service, and plan a weekday visit is a sensible next step.

Women are tired of being taken advantage of by auto service shops!!! This is my second review of the year. I feel disappointed, disrespected and ripped off.I was approved for the CAP program offered by the state, that helped to pay a portion of my emissions repair because my car didn't pass smog. The state list Fellows as an authorized shop for repairs through their program.Fellows auto diagnosed my car and stated the repairs needed were due to CODE P2004 (IMRC stock open). Work was performed May 3 2024. May 7 2024, I called the shop advising my gear shift lights were out, they were working prior. He denied responsibility. The energy was nice nasty from the start.Short quick answers, not a welcoming feeling upon visiting the shop, quick to minimize your complaint and deny any issues on their part. While on the road in, July 2024 my check engine light came on. I immediately called the shop to tell them my check engine light came back on.I expected him to tell me to bring the car back, for 2 reasons:it was within 3 months of them doing the work and I didn't drive the car often so I know I hadn't exceeded the warranty of 3,000 miles. He did NOT give me that option. He said get it diagnosed. It took time to get this done,ya'll know how life happens. February 2025 I contacted Fellows auto service station to ask for a print out of the repairs done to get this issue finally rectified. After 3 attempts, I received the invoice on Feb 28, 2025. June 15, 2025,I took my car to O'Reilly. They used the Free Veri Scan to help me identify the issue of the check engine light. Code P2004. This is the same code and diagnosis Fellows auto repair provided me and the state of Ca for the initial repairs in May 2024. I called the Fellows auto shop the same day after these findings.Sue answered.I explain the purpose for contacting them again.Immediately he became defensive and kept stating the warranty policy.I became frustrated in the mist of the covo and expressed to him why I chose this service station because I thought they operated with integrity and honesty. After all the going back and forth, I made a comment of him arguing with me and that I was so shocked that a business owner, especially a man was arguing with a customer and he literally mocked me, repeating,2x,a man arguing with a woman, just antagonizing. I advised him I felt he defrauded me and the state, by pushing my issue off and giving me the run around when I contacted his shop in July.He really became irate. Now the Convo has turned into both of us trying to be heard. He could have offered to check it to make sure it wasn't a manufacturer defect. If it was installed properly, why is the box stuck open?He expressed no concern to resolve .I suggested he could have resolved this issue in July by having me bring my car back within the warranty timeframe vs stalling time by advising me to get another diagnosis.Sue ignored me and says, maam, you can keep talking but I'm not going to hang up on you,I'm going to sit the phone down..ya'll know what happened next,he literally hung up..dial tone.By this time I knew there was no solution through him.Prior to him hanging up,I advised him I was going to write an honest review of my experience, I would file a complaint with the state and I will be contacting my local news channel to highlight the unfair service I received,he told me to do what I had to do..so here we go. BTW the mileage on my car from the time the repairs were done May 3,2024 to current June 16,2025 is 3,515 miles, that's over a year's time. I clearly was in the warranty timeframe of addressing my check engine light when I contacted them in July 2024.REGARDLESS of the outcome, I need my community to know what happened to me.This is unacceptable .Check this out... they have many 1 star reviews on Google. This validates I'm not the only one who's had a bad experience with Fellows auto service center. Not a BBB accredited business.I'm not surprised,I see why not.The lack of integrity, honesty and customer service gives a clear picture of who owns or runs this business.I'll keep ya'll posted.

Quick work smogging my 1990 VW Vanagon, which as anyone who likes older vehicles knows, is no easy task. Was recommended by another shop whose vintage test equipment was broken. Called, passed smog and uploaded to DMV within the hour. Fantastic.

I brought them a couple of cars for a pre-purchase inspection and they were quick, precise, and honest. They’re great, I recommend them!

Our first time there. We were concerned when our regular VW repair person retired a couple of years ago. The Buslab people referred us to Fellows for smog testing our 78 VW camper bus. Fellows fixed a problem with the engine and got it to pass smog. Cost a bit more than I expected, but this was the first time in a couple of years that I'd had the van serviced, so I'd say it was a fair price given inflation. We'd go back there any time.
