The grounds were beautiful and historic. There are many wildlife roaming around including peacocks, deer, and geese. Beware that if you don't arrive super early like when it opens like at 7:30 am when it first open, you will be in line for at least an hour. Even with a wait, seeing the grounds is definitely worth it since the site is important to San Antonio's history especially before Texas became a state. I noticed that the museum will be closed on Mondays starting in April 2026. Otherwise, the museum portion was decent that is more suited who is more interested in military history than me.
Really enjoyed this place. It's free but they do take donations. They have lots of Peacocks on the property, including like 3 or 4 white ones! They were all beautiful and shaking their tail feathers. The museum has tons of history, don't miss it. I would definitely recommend!
It’s a small parking lot for visitors when you enter base on the right. There is a lot of movement here as people pick up their loved ones. So spaces open up quickly.
Although this visitors center is ALWAYS full, my family and I were surprised by how quickly we received their passes considering the long line! I do not know the names of the individuals who helped us, but I had a great experience with this staff. The SM letting people in was incredibly informative and kind. And I adored the staff member who helped us get the passes, he was efficient but also kept things light with a great sense of humor that made our experience very enjoyable.
Visited a few weeks ago. Wandered about the fort and then visited the vistor center which contains a museum. The docents were very helpful and the short films showing were informative. But the layout was fantastic - starting with what it was like when started (think the Alamo) to modern day (home to 5th Army among other things). Takes about 2 hours to really make it through the museum if you read all the materials. The changes to uniforms, weapons and organization are laid out for even the neophyte to clearly see how the US Army has grown and developed. The grounds are beautiful and the peacocks beautiful. Some I have never seen before - like the white one in the picture accompanying the Google description. We got in easy (helps when you are accompanied by a retired US Army full colonel) but he did mention that for a non-military family it may take a step or two more to get in. Not sure. But if you are in San Antonio and have done the Alamo this is also a great place to spend an afternoon.
