KAOKAO Grill is a restaurant at 2993 College Ave in Berkeley, CA, serving a lunch-focused menu where American barbecue ideas meet Asian flavors. Located in Berkeley's College Avenue area, it is a fitting stop for diners looking for smoked meats, noodles, and boldly seasoned plates rather than a conventional barbecue meal. Guests describe the food as a fusion-minded experience, so it can be especially appealing to people who enjoy trying familiar ingredients in a different flavor direction.

The char siu smoked pork belly stands out in customer feedback for its sweet, salty, smoky finish and tender texture; one diner aptly called it "meat candy." The char siu set is another recurring favorite, praised for juicy pork and a glossy exterior. For a heartier bowl, reviewers point to the BBQ brisket noodle soup for its flavorful broth, tender brisket, and properly cooked noodles. Hand-pulled noodles with peanut sauce have also drawn attention, while the eggplant salad is noted for a nutty, mildly spicy sauce. A cold cucumber salad and rice offer useful companions to the richer barbecue dishes.

KAOKAO Grill's menu is best approached with an open mind: reviewers specifically describe a mix of American BBQ and Asian flavors, and some note that the taste profile may differ from what diners expect from traditional regional dishes. That perspective makes this Berkeley restaurant a good choice for curious lunch guests who value inventive combinations, generous savory flavors, and meat-forward comfort food. Seasoning can read as pronounced to some visitors, especially in dishes such as brisket noodles or eggplant salad, while others highlight the depth and balance of the sauces. The useful takeaway is simple: come for its distinctive barbecue-and-noodle approach, not for a strictly traditional template.

The setting is characterized by customers as laid-back, and service feedback includes helpful menu guidance and good service. Because food can take more than 20 minutes to arrive at times, KAOKAO Grill may suit a relaxed lunch better than a rushed stop. Arriving early can be practical as well: one customer found popular chicken dishes unavailable later in service and happily chose pork instead. The restaurant is closed Mondays and serves lunch Tuesday through Sunday, from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM, making it a convenient daytime dining option near College Avenue.

With a 4.7 rating from 172 reviews, KAOKAO Grill has built a strong local following among Berkeley diners. It is well suited to couples, friends, and solo diners who want to share a char siu set, settle in with BBQ brisket noodle soup, or explore small sides alongside their meal. For anyone searching for a restaurant in Berkeley, California with smoked pork, tender brisket, hand-pulled noodles, and a casual lunch atmosphere, KAOKAO Grill offers a specific and memorable take on barbecue-inflected Asian fusion.

Holy smokes, what a treasure! The food is outstanding here. A friend has tried it and wanted to go back a second night in a row, so out we went. The Char siu smoked pork belly is what we call "meat candy". Incredible! Perfectly salty, sweet, and smokey. The hand pulled noodles with peanut sauce- friggin amazing. I retuned the next week to try the eggplant, green beans, and more pork. We were in heaven. This place really is outstanding, and deserves 5 stars or more.

Got there when they opened, and they were very helpful with the menu. Food took awhile to arrive (20+ mins), and tastes were different. Not bad, just more fusion and may not be suitable for those looking for authentic original flavors. Mix of American bbq and Asian flavors. Still good, and would go again if we’re in the area

I’ve been here three times already! I went twice with my wife, and we both loved the char siu set and the BBQ brisket noodle soup. The soup was super flavorful! The char siu set is seriously some of the best pork you can find in the Bay Area, especially if you’re looking for a laid-back vibe. The only thing is that it can take a bit of time for your food to arrive, but it’s totally worth it!

Good service. We had the BBQ brisket noodles and the egg plant salad with a side of rice. Everything was very flavorful although a tad salty. The brisket was very tender and delicious and the noodles were cooked perfectly. The sauce on the egg plant has a delicious nutty and mildly spicy flavor.

We went a little late and they were out of their popular chicken dishes so we defaulted to the pork. The ‘char siew’ pork was very well done - tender, juicy with a nice shiny glaze on the outside. The cold cucumber salad was also good but could have used a little bit more marinading time.
