I’ve generally expected an insurance brokerage to help navigate administrative issues between the carrier, lender, and insured, so a recent experience with Main Street was disappointing. Correspondence regarding my homeowners policy was repeatedly being returned because the Truist mortgagee address on file was outdated. When the issue first arose in March, I explained that I pay my mortgage electronically and therefore didn’t have a mailing address for Truist’s mortgage servicing department. I was told that I should contact the bank myself to obtain it. Five months later, the same issue resurfaced. I ultimately researched it myself and was able to locate Truist’s current, publicly available mortgagee address. Once I provided that information, Main Street promptly submitted the correction. What bothered me more than the original administrative issue was the response when I raised a concern about the process. I explained that it was unsettling to have research involving mortgagee information pushed back to me as the non-expert when I employ an insurance brokerage in part for its expertise in navigating these matters. Rather than acknowledging that concern, I initially received only “Thank you,” followed later by an explanation that changes to mortgagee information require the insured’s authorization. I completely understand and support requiring my authorization before changing my policy. That wasn’t my concern. My concern was why the agency couldn’t research the lender’s publicly available, updated mortgagee information and then ask me to authorize the change. That distinction was never acknowledged. The correction has now been submitted, and I appreciate that. But the experience left me less confident in the level of administrative ownership and customer service I can expect when an issue falls outside of a routine transaction.
