I had lunch here with a group of friends recently and loved it! I had never tried Burmese food before so I ordered the Mohinga which was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the fried split pea fritters. My husband got the Shan noodles and the pork in his dish was so tasty. Definitely recommend checking them out!

Mom’s Special Cooking is one of those quiet North Austin gems you’re glad you didn’t overlook. Tucked into an old, unassuming building way south of Little Saigon/Chinatown off Lamar, it doesn’t advertise loudly — the food does that job. We went vegetarian and let the enthusiastic owner guide the order, which was absolutely the right move. One dish featured delicate vermicelli noodles tossed with mixed vegetables in a savory brown sauce; the other paired vegetables and egg over rice. Both were beautifully balanced, comforting, and confidently seasoned — simple on the surface, deeply satisfying in execution. Inside, the space is bright, clean, and welcoming, and the hospitality feels genuinely personal. This is Burmese home cooking done with care, not flash. Low expectations turned into a memorable meal. We’ll be back — and next time, we’re letting Mom choose again. 🍜🇲🇲

WOW incredible! I was only recently introduced to Burmese food by some friends in San Fransisco, and I'm so glad we found Mom's Special Cooking in Austin! The dry Shan noodle was so flavorful, the green tea salad had so many yummy textures, the salt and pepper dish and shrimp tasted like beer battered fish n chips with Chinese salt and pepper seasoning on top, and the Mohinga soup was so unique and comforting. And the Rainbow Ice dessert was very refreshing with so many flavors and textures. "Mom" is so sweet too, so warm and friendly.

We stopped at Mom’s Special Cooking for lunch before heading home, and it turned out to be one of the best dining experiences we have had in years. The suggested Burmese entrées were incredibly flavorful, unique, and such a fun adventure.. We loved trying dishes we have never had before and getting a glimpse into a cuisine that was completely new to us. What made the meal truly unforgettable was meeting the chefs and their family afterward. Hearing their stories and the traditions behind their cooking added so much meaning to the experience. Their warmth and pride in their food were absolutely beautiful. It’s the kind of place that feeds both your stomach and your soul.

First time trying Burmese cuisine and it was delicious! The food was so good. All my friends loved each of their dishes and I had the soup with chicken and fish balls. The broth was light and very flavorful. I also loved the mango sticky rice. The staff were incredibly friendly and walked us through the menu. Loved this place and I will be back!
