Seng Hong Oriental Market is an Asian grocery store at 4901 Old York Rd #5 in Philadelphia, PA 19141. It is a neighborhood market for shoppers looking for ingredients and specialty foods for Southeast Asian cooking, with customer reviews calling out products for Thai, Lao, Cambodian, and Vietnamese dishes. Visitors describe a focused selection that includes hard-to-find items, making the store a useful stop when a recipe calls for something that may not be available at a general grocery store.

Customers particularly appreciate the personal, helpful service. One shopper came in looking for sticky rice to make Thai mango sticky rice and received a friendly suggestion from a staff member to try stuffing it into jackfruit, too. That exchange captures the practical, conversational feel people mention in their reviews: shoppers can ask questions, get ideas, and discuss how to use an ingredient rather than simply browse shelves. Longtime customers also describe the owners as welcoming and helpful, with some returning over many years and across generations.

The market may appeal to home cooks exploring Southeast Asian recipes, families seeking familiar ingredients, and anyone hoping to find specialty foods for a particular dish. Reviewers compare it to a smaller neighborhood market with a dependable, familiar feel, rather than a large superstore. Its selection is described as specialized, especially for mainland Southeast Asian cooking, so it can be a worthwhile Philadelphia destination when you are searching for a less common ingredient. The store’s 4.3-star rating from 100 reviews reflects a range of customer experiences, while multiple comments highlight the warm service and distinctive inventory.

Seng Hong Oriental Market is open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday and Wednesday through Sunday, and is closed Tuesday. Before making a special trip, check the day’s hours and consider calling or visiting to confirm whether a particular item is in stock. Whether you are picking up sticky rice, looking for a specialty ingredient, or shopping for foods connected to Southeast Asian home cooking, this Philadelphia neighborhood grocery offers a personal alternative to a large chain. For local residents and visitors alike, it is a place to browse, ask for guidance, and discover ingredients that can help bring a favorite recipe together.

Very friendly staff and great selection! I came in looking for sticky rice for making thai sticky rice with mango, and the woman working at the counter suggested stuffing it into jack fruit as well! She joked to send her a video, and it turned out delicious so here is the video 😁😁 …

Using our experiences in Thailand for context: If H-Mart was the towering Big C Supercenter in town, then Sen Hong Oriental Market is the local market tucked into the nooks of every neighborhood – always familiar, always stocked with what you need. The owners? Think of them as your personal culinary guides, armed with warm smiles, and ready to guide you through the task of transforming that mysterious herb into a symphony of flavors in your stir-fry. Sen Hong is a rare gem in the neighborhood and having it within a short walking distance is like finding a four-leaf clover on a Tuesday – absolutely lucky! Alright, let's talk dollars and cents. The prices might seem a little high at first glance. But when you consider the sheer convenience of finding hard to find sauces, pastes, and herbs that you can't find elsewhere, well it's practically a bargain. Walking into Sen Hong is like stepping onto the set of a culinary 'Indiana Jones' adventure – you don't know what treasures you'll unearth, but you're certain to discover delicacies you didn't even know your palate was craving. It's a little like pulling a five-course meal from a magician's hat. So, if you find yourself in the Logan neighborhood of Philadelphia, visit Sen Hong Oriental Market. It's like having a flavor passport for a culinary world tour!

Rare food items for Southeast Asian cooking! This market is one of my favorites in Philadelphia. It's not as large as the Sino-Vietnamese markets on Washington Ave, but it has some very specialized inventory for mainland Southeast Asia cooking (Thai/Lao/Cambodian/Vietnamese). I've been going there for about 5 years, and it's a regular stop on grocery shopping trips. If you've ever traveled to mainland Southeast Asia, you'll know that fresh herbs are very important in making or breaking a dish. Seng Hong's well-stocked herb selection in the refrigerator is a particular strength. At any given time they have around 10 different herbs available. The freezer section is exotic. Lots of interesting new imports from Thailand there, including "sour fish" ปลาส้ม and lightly fermented gouramy ปลาสลิด. There are frozen yanang leaves ใบย่านาง and frozen sour flesh of the krasang fruit for making funky Cambodian dips. They now sell Isaan sausages (Northeastern Thai sour pork sausages), alongside Chinese and Cambodian sausages. This is where we usually get our green papayas and ingredients for papaya salads, and there are new product lines of jarred dips and sauces in a pretty steady stream from Thailand. They also have a pretty good selection of Southeast Asian cooking implements (rice steamers, mortars and pestles). The staff are very helpful. One clerk speaks Thai and Lao in addition to Khmer, and the owner's English is good.
