Tan Tan

Avoid this location The food was mediocre at best with wait staff that just didn't smile or look happy to be there. The beef soup smelled liked it was cooked in the restroom. We had to send it back bc the smell made it inedible. The Tan Tan location in Katy is five stars hands down. The shrimp dish pictures medium to large shrimp but the actual dish had baby shrimp. The waiter kept coming around to refill water but never asked once about anything else. It was a very lively atmosphere.

I stopped by Tan Tan in Houston with pretty average expectations, and honestly, that’s about how the experience turned out neither amazing nor terrible, just okay overall. It’s one of those places you hear about a lot, especially for late-night Vietnamese food, so I figured I’d finally give it a try. One thing I did appreciate right away was the cleanliness. The restaurant itself was decent, and the bathrooms were clean and well kept, which might seem like a small thing but definitely matters when you’re dining out. It made the place feel more comfortable and taken care of, so points there. As for the food, the portions were fair for the price. You’re not getting huge plates, but you’re also not leaving feeling like you got ripped off. For what you pay, the amount of food makes sense, especially if you’re just looking for something filling without expecting anything over the top. Taste-wise, the food was fine but not super memorable. Nothing tasted bad, but nothing really wowed me either. It felt like food you’d grab when you’re hungry and want something warm and familiar, not necessarily something you’d crave days later. It got the job done, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression. Service was pretty average. The staff wasn’t unfriendly, but they weren’t especially warm or attentive either. It felt a bit rushed at times, and there wasn’t much interaction beyond taking the order and dropping off the food. Not a deal breaker, but it didn’t add much to the experience. The vibe at Tan Tan is very casual. It’s not a place you go for ambiance or a special night out. Depending on the time, it can be busy and a little loud, which fits the late-night spot reputation. It’s more of a quick, no-frills type of place. Overall, I’d give Tan Tan a solid three stars. The clean bathrooms and fair portions are definite positives, but the food and service were just average. It’s a decent option if you’re nearby or looking for a late-night bite, but not somewhere I’d go out of my way to visit again

This place has been around for over 30 years, and I’ve been coming here since way back in the day—it’s amazing to see it still going strong. The food is just as good as I remember, with authentic flavors that haven’t changed over time. The shrimp fried rice is as good as I remember when I used to come here in college. Service was okay, front staff was a bit indifferent. Not many places can stay this consistent for decades, and that says a lot. If you want real, reliable Vietnamese food, this spot is a true classic.

Came here for dinner with my mother, we ordered a "Mì thập cẩm/house special noodle" and a "salt toasted squid". We waited for a very long time before they brought out my mom's noodle dish. My mom finished her noodle dish and mine still have not came out of the kitchen (pictures attached), but everyone who came after us got their dishes. We asked for my dish 3 separate times, 2 of those times, the servers never came back, the 3rd time, 5 mins after, my dish came out missing the rice that usually comes with the squid. We asked again for the rice and it was old, clumpy rice. The food was mediocre at best, the squid was underseasoned & cold. Rice was cold. Noodle was overly salty. Service was even worse. this restaurant is genuinely disappointing.

Found a cockroach in my food at Tan Tan. Staff refused to address it, challenged us to report it, and still made us pay. This is a serious food safety issue, and I have photos and a receipt documenting the incident.
