The overabundance of restaurants from "celebrity" chefs and Food Network "stars" on the Las Vegas Strip perpetuate the already grotesque artificiality of the city. But not all is illusion. Tucked far off from the Strip in a strip mall in the Rhodes Ranch neighborhood is The Black Sheep. So aptly named! The restaurant is the love letter of Top Chef spitfire Jamie Tran, who blends various culinary influences with her Vietnamese sensibilities.

The cocktails were fantastic- we ordered almost all of them- and the service was very attentive. I enjoyed the salmon skin tacos, the butternut risotto was very skillfully prepared and deliciously balanced in flavor. Nice short ribs and absolutely FIRE kimchi fried rice. The chef is particularly gifted with texture. I would have liked a little more salt on most things, and a lot more sauce in general. I also thought the portion and presentation on the New York were mildly disappointing vs the price, and we partially ordered it for the purple yam but it came with something like a garnet instead. Peach seaweed ice cream was good and very fun, and we loved the chocolate cake. I think it was cacao nibs in the sauce? Totally made the dish. Very nice vibe, chill and small. It made us very nostalgic for the place we once worked in together, but the music and decor are much more up to speed.
