A Chau is a cherished Vietnamese restaurant located along the bustling El Cajon Boulevard corridor in San Diego, California. This family-owned establishment has built a solid reputation among locals, earning an impressive 4.5-star rating from nearly 500 reviews. For those seeking authentic Vietnamese flavors in a no-nonsense setting, A Chau delivers a dining experience rooted in tradition, generosity, and genuine hospitality.

The heart of A Chau's menu lies in its banh mi sandwiches, widely regarded as some of the best in the county. Each sandwich is assembled with care, featuring generous portions of well-seasoned meats, crisp vegetables, and a satisfying spread of mayonnaise that ties everything together. Whether you opt for the house special with its medley of cold cuts or the savory pork banh mi, you will find every bite packed with flavor and texture. The Vietnamese egg rolls are another customer favorite, priced at just $1.45 each, making them an irresistible add-on to any order. For those craving something beyond sandwiches, the rice vermicelli bowls offer a lighter yet equally satisfying alternative.

One of the standout features of A Chau is its early morning schedule. Open every day at 7:00 AM, this Vietnamese restaurant caters to early risers looking for a hearty breakfast or a quick grab-and-go lunch before the typical crowds arrive. Weekend hours extend slightly longer, with doors staying open until 5:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, while weekday service wraps up at 4:00 PM. This makes it a convenient stop for commuters, students from nearby colleges, and anyone working irregular hours who needs a reliable meal at an uncommon time.

The dining atmosphere at A Chau is modest and functional. This is clearly a place where the food speaks louder than the décor. A glass-fronted counter displays the day's offerings, inviting customers to point and choose their selections in a casual, cafeteria-style format. While the setting is simple, the warmth of the service more than compensates. Multiple reviewers have noted that the person taking orders often appears to be the owner, a detail that speaks to the authentic family-business character of the establishment and adds a personal touch to every visit.

For residents and visitors of San Diego searching for an affordable, flavorful Vietnamese meal, A Chau is a reliable destination worth knowing. Its combination of quality banh mi, budget-friendly egg rolls, early hours, and friendly service makes it a standout on El Cajon Boulevard. Whether you are a longtime neighborhood regular or a curious first-time visitor, this spot invites you to experience the simple pleasure of well-made Vietnamese food served with care.

We got here quite early and this was one of the only Banh Mi places open early. We ended up ordering 2 Banh Mi's one house special and one with pork. Also got a dessert thing as well as 2 egg rolls. The Banh Mi sandwiches were packed with filling and had a nice slather of mayonnaise which is exactly how I like the sandwiches! Would definitely return another day.

Got #10. There were plenty of meat and the vegetables were just flavored enough as to not over powered everything else. I wish I could taste the butter more but I think it’s mayonnaise instead. Still good though.

Egg rolls are great! $1.45 each, can’t beat that! Service was outstanding, I’m pretty sure it was the actual owner who took my order. Obviously it’s a great Family business. The only downside is I wish they had actual sweet & sour sauce. All they have is some fishy sauce. There’s another lumpia spot nearby and they give sweet & sour sauce i like lumpia over egg rolls, but my sister introduced me to A’ Chau and every once in a while I crave egg rolls!

Don't go for the atmosphere, go for the sandwiches. If you like Vietnamese sandwiches this is one of the best places in the county, it has a buffet type glass counter that you can view the other food selections. A large variety of sandwiches and other items, also try the vietnamese egg rolls. I recommend you pick up and take out, the restaurant area is small and tight. The food prices are unexpectedly low, this place is worth the trip.

Vietnamese place that specializes in Bahn Mi sandwiches and rice vermicelli. However, the quality is lacking, you can get bigger sandwiches with better meat quality at places nextdoor. The price per sandwich looks slightly cheaper, but they charge sales tax on top of it, while other places show price with tax included. Rice vermicelli provides plenty of food, but quality of meat and egg rolls is sub par. There are plenty of better options nearby.
