Customer feedback describes sessions as attentive and individualized, with reviewers noting that Aki makes people comfortable and applies pressure thoughtfully to areas they did not realize were tense. Reviews also mention people seeking support around shoulder and neck discomfort, reduced flexibility, or a desire to live with less discomfort. These are personal customer experiences, not promised outcomes, but they give prospective clients a clear sense of the practical, body-focused reasons people choose shiatsu. They also suggest a practitioner who pays close attention to each client's stated concerns during a session.
Understanding the treatment style before booking can help set the right expectations. A reviewer described an appointment that included a portion performed by a trainee or assistant using foot-pressure ashiatsu, and said that approach was not what they expected. Since preferences and care needs differ, prospective clients can ask in advance who will provide the session, whether any trainee will participate, and which shiatsu techniques are planned. This straightforward conversation can be especially useful for first-time clients, those with a specific area of concern, or anyone looking for a particular pressure or treatment format. It also gives clients an opportunity to share relevant comfort preferences before their visit.
Aki Shiatsu has a 4.8-star rating based on 26 reviews, with positive feedback frequently citing skill, knowledge, professionalism, kindness, and a pleasant environment. The setting is described by one reviewer as nice, while other comments emphasize feeling at ease during care. For people in Albany, CA, and nearby East Bay communities who want shiatsu with a therapeutic focus, the practice may suit those who value an attentive, personalized approach. Daily hours can also work well for clients planning a daytime visit around work, errands, or ongoing wellness routines. Reviewers' varied perspectives make it useful to choose this service with clear, personal goals in mind.

Sign in to reviewI had the pleasure of receiving a shiatsu massage from Aki, and it was an outstanding experience. From the moment I arrived, he made me feel comfortable and at ease. His technique was both intuitive and skillful, targeting areas of tension I didn’t even realize I had. The pressure was just right, and I could feel the benefits almost immediately. I left the session feeling significantly more relaxed and rejuvenated, with a noticeable reduction in muscle stiffness. Aki's expertise truly shines through, and I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a healing, restorative massage. I'll definitely be returning!
Like many - I have seen gotten numerous massages, chiropractic adjustments, and other wellness services on my journey to live without discomfort. I can say without a doubt that Aki is the most skilled, knowledgeable, and effective wellness professional I have ever seen. He is a true master of the human body. I sought his services after dealing with shoulder pain for a week. After three session with Aki, my shoulder pain is gone and my entire body feels aligned in a way it rarely has. Cannot recommend his services enough - it was a blessing to stumble across this page. Please note that the treatment can hurt! But Aki is very responsive to your comfort so just verbalize how you feel.
I went to see Aki due to shoulder and neck injury. I was told the shiatsu would be in two parts, the first part performed by his trainee/assistant Paul. I should have left right then. Paul used his feet to apply pressure on my body, which is a treatment called ashiatsu and is not what is advertised on the website nor what I had booked a session for. At one point I felt I very sharp pain in my chest. After the session I had terrible pain in that spot and throughout my right rib cage. This got worse and worse and days later I am still in severe pain. I had to go to urgent care and was told I had torn cartilage and costochondritis (inflamed rib cage, very very painful) due to Paul placing pressure on my back ribs in an unsafe way. I have been healing from car accident injuries for over a year and am now in even more severe pain due to this injury. While I had booked a session with Aki based on his experience and the reviews in fact the majority of the session was done by this trainee who I know nothing about. Truly horrendous experience and I’ve been told this injury could take a very long time to heal. I have asked for a full refund and have not received a refund for this session that was not at all what I booked for. I’m absolutely devastated to now be dealing with another injury when I was seeking healing. Be very wary of this business.
Wonderful experience, nice environment, and such kind people! First time receiving a shiatsu treatment and let me tell you it definitely is not what I'd call a massage. Very therapeutic vs relaxing which entails for actual results and healing inside and out. Aki was professional, attentive to my specific needs, and skilled in his craft. As was his apprentice. The treatment is painful but well worth it. Would highly recommend but remember not your typical massage. Wear comfortable loose fitting clothing and there is no oil involved.
Mr. Aki Nagata is possibly the most experienced Shiatsu practitioner working today in California. (Elsewhere, elements of Shiatsu have been incorporated into massage therapy.) But I wanted faster improvement, reduced pain and greater flexibility, so I went for traditional shiatsu. Aki Shiatsu may not provide a light massage, unless requested. He provides an effective and real sports treatment. I am going back tomorrow and then continue after that as needed. I feel that I got a month’s worth of improvement in one day.
