Anchalee is a warmly regarded Thai restaurant at 1096 Dwight Way in Berkeley, CA, serving lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tucked away off San Pablo, it offers a sit-down midday option for Berkeley residents, nearby workers, and visitors seeking Thai food in California's East Bay. With a 4.5 rating drawn from 416 reviews, Anchalee has built a strong record among diners who value flavorful cooking and a meal they want to revisit. Reviewers often describe the food as authentic and evocative of dishes they have eaten in Thailand or across Asia, giving the restaurant a clear appeal for people who pay attention to regional aromas, spice, and balance. The daytime schedule makes its role as a lunch destination especially clear.

Several dishes stand out in guest comments. The Hainanese chicken rice is a frequent favorite, noted for tender chicken, a flavorful sauce, and rice that completes the dish rather than merely filling the plate. Green curry receives equally specific praise: its spice is described as well judged, while the vegetables retain a fresh taste and pleasant texture. The restaurant's kitchen also creates an aromatic first impression. One diner recalls the room filled with galangal and lemongrass, details that suggest a meal shaped by fragrance as much as heat. For a Thai restaurant in Berkeley, those repeated observations help set useful expectations before ordering. They also point toward cooking meant to be noticed slowly, not masked by one dominant flavor.

Anchalee is worth considering when a group wants more than one direction at the table. A reviewer specifically mentioned ordering from both regular and vegetarian menus, including a Laos-style papaya salad, egg noodles with yellow curry, beef and tofu selections, and fried taro with sweet potatoes. Thai iced tea with lemon was another memorable choice. Availability can change, but these guest-reported orders show a menu experience that can work for diners interested in vegetables as well as those looking for meat-based dishes. They also make the restaurant a sensible choice for repeat visits: several customers say they return to try something new rather than ordering the same plate every time. That range supports a shared lunch where each person can choose according to appetite and preference.

The setting complements the food with a cozy, little-place feel and staff whom reviewers call friendly and kind. It is a natural fit for an unhurried solo lunch, a casual catch-up, or anyone exploring Thai flavors dish by dish. As with many smaller popular dining rooms, one review notes a wait to be seated and served during a busy visit; planning a little extra time can make the meal feel more relaxed. For dependable daytime dining in Berkeley, California, Anchalee pairs distinctive Thai dishes, welcoming service, and the kind of comforting atmosphere that encourages another visit.

Absolutely love this Thai restaurant! The flavors are so authentic — it really reminds me of what I had back in Asia. Their Hainanese chicken rice is amazing — tender chicken, flavorful sauce, and perfect rice. Cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and definitely a place I’d love to come back to!

Delightful little place tucked away off San Pablo, this restaurant sets the standard for what comfort Thai restaurant experience ought to be. It took us a while to be seated, and then served, but the anticipation was worth it. The restaurant was overflowing with the aroma of galangal and lemongrass. It's one of the few restaurants that has an entire vegetarian menu, which made my decisions much harder! The curry puffs are definitely worth it - little Thai samosas that melt in your mouth. I wish it came with a chutney or a sauce, but they held their own. We got the tempura fried yam and taro root and they didn't disappoint either. The little side salad with cucumbers and onions in a sweet sauce was top notch! The lemongrass aroma was so overpowering I had to get the Tom Yum soup. It was good, not great. Somehow the taste didn't live up to the aroma. We got the tofu in sweet peanut sauce and it was decadent! I don't remember the last time I had a Thai dish so well balanced - sweet and just spicy enough to feel the burn. At this point I was too stuffed and even though the dessert menu looked interesting, I had to skip it.

Green curry was just the right amount of spicy w/ lots of veggies that were cooked just enough to still taste fresh. Everything was cooked perfectly and came out super quick!

I have been here many times trying new dishes because everything is authentic. Everything I have eaten here, I have also eaten in Thailand many times; each dish is so delicious and it takes me right back to Thailand with every bite.
