The shelves are known for carrying basic shelf-stable groceries, making the store a practical stop when a household item is needed without a large shopping trip. Customer feedback also highlights a notably broad selection of Indian spices, with both whole and ground choices, plus dal and other lentils. For Berkeley shoppers who value useful pantry staples alongside more distinctive ingredients, Cedar Market offers an approachable local option at a familiar address. It suits shoppers who need a quick, practical grocery run close to home.

Alongside grocery basics, the market's reviewed offerings include hot samosas, TCHO chocolate, and GT's kombucha on tap, creating several ready-to-enjoy or special-occasion possibilities in one small stop. Shoppers have also mentioned a selection of beers and wine, which can be useful when a meal, gathering, or last-minute need calls for an extra item. The appeal is not a sprawling supermarket experience; it is the ability to pick up a few necessities while discovering spices, lentils, snacks, and drinks that may not be expected in every convenience-oriented market. That mix of everyday and specific finds gives Cedar Market a distinct neighborhood role for local shoppers.

Reviews portray the setting as a charming, well-stocked little corner store and a convenient destination for spontaneous needs. One customer describes making it part of a late-night stroll, while another recommends it for last-minute shopping. These comments suggest a casual, neighborhood-scale atmosphere rather than a formal specialty shop. Cedar Market holds a 4.4 rating from 174 reviews, a useful signal for people comparing grocery stores in Berkeley. Individual experiences can differ, but shoppers have specifically praised the store's selection and, in some feedback, helpful service. It is a sensible choice for neighbors, students, couples, and anyone looking for an easy nearby stop during daily errands or a planned pantry restock.

Convenience is part of the draw at this California Street location. Cedar Market is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 9:30 PM, and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, allowing room for morning errands, after-work pickups, and evening visits. All of the basic shelf stable items, plus an incredible selection of Indian spices (mix of whole and ground) and dal (lentils). Millennials: GT’s kombucha on tap, hot samosas, and TCHO chocolate. And a UPS pickup/drop off point. You can get all your neighborhood business done here! Spices include but are not limited to: fennel seeds, fenugreek, mustard seeds, green cardamom pods, black cardamom, turmeric, garam masala, curry powder, chili powder... the list goes on and on...

UPDATE: UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. A new crew is running the spot, some really cool guys from the Punjab, who are friendly and helpful. My only concern is one of the tattooed guys working there seems a little sneering and mean with the local kids, and myself on occasion, and since they are in our neighborhood, I think he should show a little more respect with people who have been here a while. Other than that, I think they are off to a good start. The quintessential mom and pops neighborhood corner store. The previous owners, some nice Chinese folk, I remember from my childhood, had been there for over 50 years when the new owners bought the store. This is the ideal store when you're in a rush and you need a quick breakfast, coffee, and a newspaper, or it's the end of the day and you need some dinner, a beer, and maybe some Tylenol. They will carry items if you are a regular (I'm not sure if this was a good idea for me since I like Lemonheads) and ask, they recently installed a Peet's coffee service, for quick drive-by's, and a nice selection of wines and beers for the locals. Really nice people own this store.

Cedar Market is a charming little corner store that feels like a hidden gem, especially for me and my boyfriend Matthew. Whenever I stay with him, we love taking a late-night stroll to this spot—it’s become one of our favorite evening rituals. The market is perfectly stocked for those spontaneous snack runs. It's the perfect slice of local love. 💕
