Charlie's Market is a neighborhood grocery store at 2148 University Ave, East Palo Alto, CA 94303, serving shoppers who want island groceries and familiar international staples close to home. With a 4.1-star rating from 60 reviews, it comes across as a longtime local market rather than a generic supermarket. People mention coming here for Pacific Islander, Polynesian, and Melanesian foods, along with ingredients that help everyday meals taste the way they should. For anyone searching for a practical, community-rooted place to buy specialty groceries in East Palo Alto, this market fills an important role.

The store stands out for its focused selection of foods that are not easy to replace elsewhere nearby. Reviewers describe it as a place for island and Asian items, plus international ingredients that support home cooking and family recipes. That makes Charlie's Market especially useful for shoppers looking for specific pantry goods, sauces, and ingredients tied to Pacific Island traditions. It is the kind of market where the purpose is clear: help people find the foods they already know and love, without having to drive far.

Just as important as the inventory is the feeling people describe in the store. Customers often talk about the staff as kind, family-oriented, and familiar, with some saying they have been coming here since childhood. That kind of repeat business suggests a market built on relationships and trust. The atmosphere sounds straightforward and no-frills, but also personal, which can matter a lot when you want a store that understands what its community is looking for.

The hours are worth noting before you go: Charlie's Market is closed on Monday, open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and open Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A few reviewers mention that timing matters, so planning a visit during the middle of the day may make the stop easier. That practical detail can be helpful if you are shopping for a special meal and want to avoid a rushed trip or a missed visit.

If you are in East Palo Alto, CA and looking for a grocery store with island foods, Asian groceries, and hard-to-find ingredients, Charlie's Market is a strong local option. It is a good fit for Pacific Islander and Polynesian families, home cooks stocking up on familiar staples, and neighbors who want a small market with a clear specialty. It may not be the place for a broad supermarket run, but for the right shopper, it offers something more specific and more personal.

Don’t go at 10am, because Charlie is just waking up then, try around 10:45/11am. And dont go at 5:30p, the store is closed and locked by then. So be there before 5p. Besides the island time, you get most of your needs here for pacific islander/polynesian/melanesian foods. ,

Nice people but very overpriced and usually late. I waited a whole hour on a Sunday. Usually they are supposed to be open at 10 am but noooooo they weren't there until an hour later maybe even more. I do like the fact that they offer international foods otherwise I'd have to go over the dumbarton bridge to find what I need.

Prices are pretty high, but you can't find any other store with food from the island like here. Staff are like family known them since I was a kid.
