For people comparing restaurants in Westminster, California, the appeal here is clear: traditional specialties, generous flavor, and a local atmosphere that feels lived-in rather than polished.
The star of the menu at Com Tam Thien Hao is, unsurprisingly, cơm tấm—Vietnamese broken rice served with a range of savory proteins and sides. Customer feedback frequently points to dishes like plate #41, a broken rice combination with steamed egg cake, grilled shrimp paste on sugar cane, and BBQ pork, as well as plate #45, rice vermicelli with BBQ pork and grilled shrimp. Diners also mention plate #44, broken rice with Korean-style beef ribs, showing that the menu offers several ways to enjoy the restaurant’s signature focus. Reviews describe the food as flavorful, with good texture in the grilled meats and shrimp, and portions that can feel satisfying for those specifically seeking a classic cơm tấm meal. If you are in Westminster and want something other than phở, this is the kind of place many locals and visitors consider for a dedicated broken-rice stop.
The atmosphere at Com Tam Thien Hao is best described as small, busy, and energetic. Multiple reviews portray it as a hole-in-the-wall restaurant that gets crowded, with closely spaced tables and a lively, sometimes noisy dining room. That setup may not be ideal for people seeking a quiet or spacious meal, but it can be part of the charm for guests who appreciate a neighborhood eatery with steady traffic and visible local support. In a dining area as competitive as Little Saigon in Westminster, CA, a full room often signals that people know what they came for. This restaurant may suit diners who care more about authentic Vietnamese comfort food than a polished setting, including couples, small groups, local regulars, and travelers passing through Orange County.
Service is another point mentioned by customers, with some reviews specifically describing the staff as excellent and the owner as dedicated to Vietnamese cooking. That kind of feedback helps paint Com Tam Thien Hao as a restaurant where the food remains the central draw, supported by attentive hospitality. The menu is also noted as being fairly large, which can be helpful for guests dining with different preferences, even if broken rice remains the signature category. For families, students, and working locals in Westminster, the restaurant’s daytime-to-evening schedule makes it an accessible option across much of the week, whether for a late breakfast, lunch, or early dinner.
For practical planning, Com Tam Thien Hao is open Monday from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM, closed Tuesday, and open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM. That consistent schedule gives visitors a clear window to stop by when spending time in Westminster or nearby parts of Orange County. Overall, Com Tam Thien Hao stands out as a dependable Vietnamese restaurant in Westminster, CA for diners who want classic cơm tấm, vermicelli dishes, grilled meats, and a bustling local setting. Sign in to reviewThis is a hole in the wall type restaurant. Waiting was long, very crowded and noisy. Table next to each other, feel like sardines. Their food plate #41 (broken rice with steam cake, grill shrimp paste on sugar cane, BBQ pork) and #45 (rice vermicelle with bbq pork and grill shrimp), both dishes were delicious, generous portion, enough to share. I won't dine in but definitely will order to go next time.
I haven't eaten broken rice for a while, so this time my partner and I decided to try this restaurant when we visit Orange County. There's a big menu with a lot of food. The food is good, and the service is excellent.
Decided to try something different for lunch in Little Saigon today. Instead of opting for the many Phở places in Little Saigon, I went here and tried some Cơm Tấm. It tasted great and the portion size was generous. I liked the texture of the meat and the shrimp on the sugar cane as well as the shredded pork which complemented the rice. Dining experience was pretty good, my waiter was friendly.
Today my husband and I were excited to try Com Tam Thien Hao. We ordered #44 - broken rice with Korean style beef ribs, spending about $21. We genuinely wanted to enjoy our meal, but we were surprised by how small the portions were for the price, compared to other Com Tam places in the area. The beef ribs were also extremely salty, to the point where it was hard to finish. I mentioned it politely to a woman who seemed to be the owner or manager, half wearing a black hat, just to share the feedback. Instead of a quick apology or even a simple “I understand,” she responded, “You’ve already eaten it, so what do you want to change?” I wasn’t asking for a replacement, and I wasn’t trying to get anything out of it. I just wanted to let her know in case other customers feel the same. I just expected a little kindness and professionalism. She said it was marinated that way, then turned away, mumbled something under her breath, and walked inside without saying anything else. We left feeling unsatisfied and dismissed. It was disappointing because we came in excited and hopeful. There are many broken rice restaurants in the are with bigfer portions for the price and better service. A little respect would have gone a long way
Owner is very dedicated and is an expert at her craft of Vietnamese food. You’ll definitely be feed well and experiencing flavor town. Would recommend this spot for any other travelers near the Westminster area wanting something tasty and delicious.
