Đà Thành Restaurant is a family-run Vietnamese restaurant in San Jose, California, located at 403 N Capitol Ave. Known for serving authentic, traditional dishes that go beyond the familiar phở and bánh mì, this neighborhood gem has earned a solid 4.3-star rating from over 50 reviews. If you're someone who enjoys exploring the deeper, more regional side of Vietnamese cuisine, Đà Thành is the kind of place that rewards curiosity.

What makes Đà Thành stand out is its commitment to dishes that are truly traditional—the kind you'd find in Vietnamese homes rather than on most restaurant menus in the West. The signature dish here is bún đậu mắm tôm, a beloved Northern Vietnamese street food featuring rice vermicelli, fried tofu, and a bold fermented shrimp paste dipping sauce. Customers rave about this dish, calling it nostalgic and delicious. Another standout is cháo lòng, a hearty porridge with pork offal that regulars describe as flavorful and comforting, served with clean, well-prepared ingredients and tasty accompanying sauces.

Beyond these specialties, the menu also features bánh canh, a thick noodle soup, along with sizzling beef, seasonal udon, fresh spring rolls, and refreshing avocado smoothies. One reviewer even highlighted the "secret garden" drink as a particularly fresh and pleasant surprise. While the menu is intentionally simple—offering just a handful of carefully prepared items—each dish is made with care and authenticity. It is worth noting that while some customers associate the restaurant with mắm tôm, the dipping sauce served may actually be mắm tép, a similar but distinct fermented shrimp condiment.

The atmosphere at Đà Thành is warm and welcoming, reflecting its identity as a family-run establishment. Reviewers consistently mention the friendly staff and attentive service. When the patio area gets warm, the team has been known to go the extra mile—literally wheeling out an air conditioner to keep guests comfortable. Prices are reasonable, making it an accessible option for anyone looking to enjoy a genuine Vietnamese meal without overspending. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM and closed on Wednesdays, it is a convenient spot for both lunch and dinner in the San Jose area.

Đà Thành Restaurant is best suited for adventurous eaters and anyone who wants to experience the authentic, homestyle flavors of Vietnam. If you are willing to step outside your comfort zone and try something different from the usual Vietnamese-American fare, this is the place to do it. Whether you are reconnecting with familiar tastes from home or discovering dishes like bún đậu mắm tôm and cháo lòng for the first time, Đà Thành delivers an honest, flavorful dining experience that keeps customers coming back for more.

Authentic Vietnamese restaurant with special dishes, the ones that are not popular to Westerners because of the ingredients. We came in for Bún đậu mắm tôm and ordered a side of Bánh canh. They were all tasty and on point. It’s been a while since I had Bún đậu. This felt both nostalgic and delicious. The staff were pretty friendly. The uncle serving us was quite humorous and kind. Overall, it was a joyful experience. We will be back another time.

Chao long - the pork organs and porridge, so delicious. The most important thing is cleanliness and flavorful sauces coming with this. Sizzling beef and the season udon are awesome as well. For the drink, recommend the secret garden - what a nice name to call, taste so fresh. In general, price is acceptable, not cheap but you get a big portion instead.

Good place to eat different pork offal dishes, with reasonable price. One small notice is that they don't actually have mắm tôm, but instead offer mắm tép dipping sauce. The service was a bit slow, despite not too many customers when we came.

Authentic meal. The menu is simple, only a few items to choose from. The people were friendly. If you are adventurous and want to try something different and can go outside your comfort zone I recommend you check out this spot

Came here for the bún đậu mắm tôm - it was everything I hoped for and more! Spring rolls and avocado smoothies were fantastic as well. Great service—nice family run restaurant. They even wheeled out the air conditioner for us since the patio area was a little warm. Will definitely be back to try the bánh canh!
