Engine Works Inc is an established auto repair shop serving drivers in Alameda, California, from its location at 1923 Minturn St. For vehicle owners looking for capable diagnosis, repair, and ongoing maintenance, the shop is known through customer feedback for experienced technical work and a practical approach to complex automotive problems. With a 4.7 rating from 92 reviews, Engine Works Inc is a local option for motorists who value thorough service and repairs intended to hold up over time.

Customers describe bringing in a wide range of vehicles and concerns, from family cars and work vans to a 1999 Miata. Reported services include brake repair, transmission repair, oil changes, electronic evaluations and repair, cylinder head and valve cover work, and engine-related repairs. In one review, a customer said the team repaired a cylinder head and valve cover when other shops had recommended replacing both components, helping the customer avoid more than $1,000 in costs. Another customer noted that the shop diagnosed a difficult brake-system issue after being referred for what appeared to require dealer-level diagnostic equipment.

For major engine concerns, reviews point to careful follow-through rather than a quick surface-level fix. A customer whose Miata overheated and developed a blown head gasket shared that Engine Works had the engine block machined, reassembled the engine, and identified and addressed the likely cause of the overheating. That kind of reported attention to root causes can matter for Alameda drivers facing problems that need more than routine maintenance. Customers also mention work that has held up well, with one household returning over more than eight years for service across four vehicles.

The experience at Engine Works Inc is best suited to people seeking knowledgeable automotive repair in Alameda, CA, including drivers with persistent mechanical or electrical issues, older vehicles, work vehicles, and cars needing regular maintenance. Reviews frequently refer to Eric and the team as skilled, thorough, and able to explain or diagnose challenging concerns. One reviewer noted that pricing can be on the higher side, so it may be helpful to discuss the scope of work and repair options before service begins.

Engine Works Inc is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM and is closed Saturday and Sunday. For drivers searching for an Alameda auto repair shop with experience across brakes, engines, transmissions, electronics, and maintenance, it is a weekday resource with a track record reflected in long-term customer relationships and detailed repair feedback.

Brought my work van here to repair the cylinder head and valve cover. Other shops were turning me away insisting that I just replace both parts. Eric and his team repaired both parts and easily saved me over $1,000.

I’ve taken my car to Engine Works in Alameda a few times, and overall they’ve done a solid job. Their work has held up well, and the technicians clearly know what they are doing. I’ve had a couple of small issues in the past, but nothing serious. They are definitely on the expensive side, so keep that in mind. The good thing is that they offer strong warranties on the work they do, which helps balance out the higher cost. Overall, Engine Works is reliable and provides quality service, and you can expect the repairs to be done right.

I'm very impressed. I have handled my own vehicle maintenance for decades. I caused a problem (my fault) with my brake system and gave up trying to diagnose it. Thinking I needed dealer-level service tools, another great shop in town referred me to Engine Works. Eric and his team were able to diagnose and repair a tricky, compound, slightly intermittent problem (that other shops kinda gave up on), within an hour of diagnostics service. Respect. They earned every penny. Very cool that we have facilities like this on the island.

Took my partners 99 Miata to them, it had overheated and blew a head gasket. They did a great job, sent the engine block out to get machined and put it all back together. In fixing the blow head gasket, they found the likely root cause of the overheating, and fixed that. Service was fast and thorough, communication was great, they kept me appraised of the progress and status throughout. And as for the price, it was very reasonable given the scope of the work.

I've taken all four automobiles that we own in our family to Engine Works over the past 8+ years. Brakes, transmission repair, oil changes, electronic evaluations and repair, etc. Eric and his crew there are excellent at what they do. They are highly qualified in auto repair and service and have always been honest with their opinions. They are not out to waste your money. They are out to make sure you are driving an automobile that is safe and qualified to be on the road. We will continue to use Engine Works and have guided a number of friends and neighbors to them.
