Foreign & Domestic Affairs (FDA) Automotive Service is an auto repair shop at 1040 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR. Customer feedback describes a neighborhood mechanic known for straightforward communication, careful work, and practical help when a vehicle needs attention. With a 5.0 rating from 50 reviews, FDA has earned strong praise from drivers who value clear explanations and honest options. Reviews mention the team members James and Brian by name, highlighting a welcoming, helpful approach and confidence in their diagnostic expertise. Whether you drive a well-used daily car or an older vehicle you want treated with care, FDA is a local option to consider for auto repair in Portland.

Customers describe the shop’s work as grounded in understanding the problem before recommending what to do next. One driver with a 1990 Toyota Pickup appreciated finding a mechanic who took the truck seriously and provided a quote that was significantly lower than another estimate. Another reviewer says Brian quickly identified a car problem, even though the driver arrived without knowing what was wrong. For motorists facing an unexpected warning sign or unfamiliar noise, this kind of diagnostic guidance can make the next steps easier to understand. Reviews also note that the team explains available options with the goal of getting customers safely back on the road.

The examples shared by customers include repairs for a broken belt and seized pulley on a vintage minivan, completed within 24 hours after the vehicle stopped and began producing smoke nearby. A longtime customer also reports that FDA addressed poor fuel economy in a 2012 Honda Fit with nearly 200,000 miles, helping the car run well again. Other feedback mentions service on two Honda Fits and care for an older Toyota pickup. These are customer experiences rather than a complete service menu, but they show the range of vehicles and repair concerns people have brought to the shop. Drivers can contact FDA to discuss their vehicle’s specific needs.

The atmosphere customers describe is neighborly and reassuring, especially when a car problem arrives at an inconvenient moment. One reviewer says the shop made room to help in a pinch, while another was grateful for short-notice assistance after a breakdown. Customers also emphasize fair pricing, honest advice, and being given choices rather than pressure. FDA may suit Portland drivers looking for a local mechanic who will explain a diagnosis, discuss repair options, and treat an older or high-mileage vehicle thoughtfully. The shop is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and closed Saturday and Sunday. Located on SE Clinton Street, Foreign & Domestic Affairs Automotive Service serves drivers seeking dependable, practical auto repair in Portland, Oregon.

Wow — what a FANTASTIC experience. Honestly, one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with a mechanic. I have a 1990 Toyota Pickup and was struggling to find a mechanic who was knowledgeable, honest, and would truly treat the truck with care. Not only did FDA’s quote come in significantly lower than Toyota’s, but they also correctly diagnosed several issues that Toyota had identified inaccurately. They completed the repairs quickly, at a great price and truly went above and beyond. They even fixed a few extra things that weren’t included in the quote, like my tire and a bouncing hood latch issue. On top of all that, the customer service was incredibly friendly and professional throughout the entire process. I will absolutely be using FDA exclusively as my mechanic moving forward!

Today, my car had a problem, and without any information, I just drove around the neighborhood blindly. Luckily, I ended up at FDA Automotive and felt honored to be there. James and Brian are really nice and honest people. Brian is really an expert. He quickly figured out the problem with my car and gave the best solution, so I could get it fixed fast. They’re not the type to just say you need to buy a bunch of replacement parts. They carefully inspect the car like professionals, and even if it can be repaired without new parts, they’ll offer that option. They also give you other choices, so you can pick what works best for you. I don’t want to share what they’ve done for me to avoid raising expectations publicly, but anyone who meets them can see what great souls and kind hearts they have. Very happy to be here! Best for this great family!

My vintage mini van had me worried when it suddenly stopped and was producing smoke, just a few block from this mechanic. I was able to get it to the shop where they diagnosed a broken belt and seized pulley. They had everything fixed within 24 hours. I was glad they could help me on short notice, with clear communication and friendly service. Thanks again guys! Im sure I’ll be back - hopefully not too soon.

I'm so grateful to have this honest, family business in my neighborhood. I've went to them for years to work on two different Honda fits I've owned over the years. They recently fixed a poor mpg issue on my 2012 fit with nearly 200k miles. They got my Honda running as good as new..Their prices are fair and competitive.
