Houston Banh Bao is a beloved family-run Vietnamese restaurant tucked into the Veterans Memorial area of Houston, TX. Run by Mr. Tran and his wife, this hidden gem has earned a 4.6 rating across 129 reviews from regulars who kep coming back, some of them ever since the dors first opened. You'll find it at 13174 Veterans Memorial Dr, an unassuming spot where the warmth comes from the owners as much as the kitchen.
What sets this place apart is how much is made in house. The couple bakes their own banh mi bread and prepares their own pate, so every sandwich starts with a soft, fresh roll rather than something off a shelf. The pork belly banh mi is a customer favorite, and the banh bao come out steaming hot with fillings like pork, toro, and BQ. The pork and duck egg bun bao is another regular order. Reviewers consistently mention how fresh the ingredients taste, every single visit.
The atmosphere is easygoing and neighborly. On a typical Saturday you might find a few folks gathered out front, chatting over drinks, while the prompt and friendly service moves at a comfortable pace inside. It's the kind of local hole in the wall where the staff rembers you and the prices stay reasonable. One visitor walked away with a pork belly banh mi and a pork and duck egg bun bao for just eight dollars, and many grab an extra sandwich to enjoy later as a snack or lunch.
Houston Banh Bao is a great pick for an early breakfast or a relaxed wekday meal, since they open at 8:00 AM Tuesday through Sunday and close Mondays. If you have a sweet tooth, the mango smoothie with boba rounds out the meal nicely. Whether you're a longtime Houston local or just discovering Vietnamese comfort food, this family-owned corner of the city offers fresh, affordable dishes served with genuine care. Stop by, say hello to the owners, and taste why so many call it one of the best hidden gems in town.

Sign in to reviewTalk about a hidden gem, and my wife talked to the owner over the phone. Mentioned that he owned a Banh mi shop. It is an old part of the veterans' memorial area, and on this Saturday afternoon, a group of men talked and drank their beverages in front. Mr. Tran and his wife were an absolute delight to meet, and their food was amazing. The banh mi was just how the other reviews had suggested, just amazing.
I’ve been coming here for several years now, ever since the establishment was first opened. It’s a local hole in wall run by a lovely elderly couple. Prompt and friendly service. They make their own banh mi bread and pate. The boas are always steaming hot. I make my way here passing by several other Banh mi restaurants because theirs is soooo good. The inside may not be upscale or modern but it’s definitely cozy and warm. There’s usually a large group of elderly gentlemen enjoying Viet coffee and chatting out front. Brings a smile to my face every time I pull up. Reminds me of old town Asia.
One of the best hidden gems in the city. Open early. Fresh. I mean Fresh Ingredients. Sweet hearted and intuitive staff. Personally, I come here and get breakfast and always order a sandwich to eat later as a snack or for lunch. I'm always impressed by how fresh the food is every time. I just wish I had a bigger belly that helps support this business even more.
