Seafood is central to the experience at Kaisen Don. Diners have specifically mentioned fresh fish and oysters, alongside sushi selections such as the Tiger Roll and a small omakase sushi set. Reported orders also include wasabi octopus, shoyu ramen, grilled unagi, and grilled fish tail, giving the restaurant an experience that extends beyond standard sushi rolls. The seating and atmosphere help distinguish a visit to Kaisen Don. Guests can choose conventional wooden tables and chairs or traditional Japanese-style low tables with floor seating, a detail noted by visitors as part of the experience. Calming music, a quaint room, and a peaceful nighttime vibe have been cited in reviews, while other guests describe the setting as romantic without being overly formal. That combination lends itself to a casual dinner, a date night, or a meal with relatives and friends. One family group visited at lunchtime, and a larger birthday dinner also suggests the restaurant can work well for shared occasions.
Like many full-service Japanese restaurants, Kaisen Don may be best approached with an idea of the meal you want. Reviewers have noted that a multi-item dinner or a group meal can add up quickly, especially when selections include sushi sets and grilled seafood; another reviewer felt the food did not fully match the price. That perspective sits alongside positive accounts that emphasize fresh seafood, enjoyable meals, and the distinct dining room. For visitors deciding where to eat in San Leandro, CA, Kaisen Don is a fitting consideration when Japanese atmosphere matters alongside sushi, seafood, ramen, and grilled dishes. Came here for dinner and the bill was about $120 for two. We ordered the wasabi octopus, Tiger Roll, a small omakase sushi set, and a grilled fish tail. The food was decent, but nothing particularly impressive for the price. The biggest issue was the number of small fruit flies inside the restaurant. They kept landing on the table and even near the food, which made the whole dining experience quite uncomfortable. The interior looks nice, but overall it doesn’t feel worth the price.
Authentic, fresh, and different. Came by lunch hour on a Monday with my cousin, niece, and newborn nephew. We were able to sit at the traditional Japanese tables and I'll say, make sure you wear the right bottoms cause denim was not the best idea. The interior was amazing! You walk into a different world with the hardwood and aesthetics of a Japanese establishment. For drinks, we had some Asashi, a strawberry sake, and another sake. For food, we had a sashimi plate, salmon nigiri, and a beef bowl. Food items tasted fantastic! Drinks were refreshing! Our server was amazing! Having a little one being fussy near the end of our meal, our server was kind enough to warm up some water to dip a baby bottle to feed the nephew. The menu has a variety of items so that everyone in the group can try something to eat. Definitely can't wait to come back and try other delicious items.
Very expensive but good food. For context, I brought my son for his 25th birthday. We had 9 people, all 17+ years old and _no_ alcohol was ordered. The bill for 9 people with automatic tip came out to be $390 or $44/person. With that out of the way, we had a good experience. The waitress was very gentle and patient. The place has nice decoration and Japanese architecture.. at least it reminds me of one which is a nice plus on the ambience. We sat at the upper platform so that part is not wheelchair accessible. They have both menu book and also QR code so you can see what the food looks like. The raw stuff were fresh. Photos shows the things we ordered and everyone loved it. Since it's very expensive, we only come here on very special occasion and this is my 3rd visit in 2 years. Yes I would go back again.
This is a great Japanese restaurant. We had a great time. The food was excellent. The atmosphere is quaint and romantic. You can sit at wooden tables with chairs or sit on a mat at authentic Japanese style tables. I highly recommend this restaurant for fun casual dining or for a romantic date night.
