Laughing Monk Cafe is a Thai restaurant at 737 Huntington Ave, Boston, MA 02115, in the Mission Hill area near Harvard Medical School. With a 4.5-star rating from 986 reviews, it is a well-reviewed neighborhood option for Thai food, with Japanese dishes also on the menu. That mix can suit diners who are choosing between Thai and Japanese flavors, as well as groups looking for a few different kinds of dishes in one place. The address makes it a convenient stop for people in Mission Hill and nearby parts of Boston.
Guests mention curries as a particular strength. Green curry with seafood is praised for its creamy texture, flavor, and adjustable-feeling spice, while other reviewers call the red curry excellent and enjoyed it with Royal Broccoli. Tom yum coconut soup, moo ping, and panang curry also appear among customer favorites. Reviews describe vegetarian dumplings as very good, and the menu is noted by diners as vegan-friendly, giving plant-based guests options to consider. Japanese choices, including sushi rolls, add another direction for a shared meal, though individual experiences with specific dishes vary.
The atmosphere is described as cozy, with reviewers noting that the restaurant can get busy. Its Mission Hill location and welcoming neighborhood feel make it a reasonable choice for a casual lunch, a weekend meal, or dining with friends who have different preferences. Reviews are not uniformly enthusiastic about every dish: some guests have been less impressed with particular noodle or side items, while others highlight the curries and seafood. This range of feedback is useful for setting expectations and choosing based on the dishes that customers mention most positively.
One practical detail to know is that rice may be charged separately rather than automatically coming with a curry or other entree; one reviewer also described the side as small for the price. Check the current menu and pricing when ordering, especially if you expect rice alongside your meal. Parking can be difficult when the restaurant is busy, according to a local guest. Reviewers mention metered street parking nearby and a limited number of two-hour visitor spaces, so planning extra time or considering another way to arrive may help.

Nicely nested close to Harvard Med School and right near Mission Hill. Busy though and can be hard to find parking - there are some metered parking on the street nearby and few 2 hour visitors parking. It's cosy inside. The inside-inside area seems to be reserved for special functions. Staff are friendly but sometimes (and saying this cuz I felt it on both occasions that I went in there in person) it can feel like they are rushing you... To order and to get the bill. Also the QR code for the menu never worked for me. My phone is not old but somehow it just cannot read it. And then you read the menu and still have to order what you want through a waiter/waitress. It's not like ordering from your phone. I find the system kinda confusing and they don't quite give you clear directions: just "menu from QR code". Food here is pretty good. I've had it as catered food from various events. But gosh that ground beef (Kapow basil) was SUPER salty 😵. Pad Thai (I swear I took a picture but maybe it wasn't saved) with chicken was good. Tom yum coconut soup was okay. Drunken noodle was pretty good, would recommend. Overall nice Thai food but I think I prefer it catered than eating at the restaurant.
One of my favorite places in Mission Hill! It’s a great spot when you can’t decide between Thai or Japanese food because they have both 🍣🍜 This restaurant is also very vegan-friendly, which my boyfriend really appreciates. My all-time favorite combo is the moo ping, tom yum coconut soup, and panang curry with beef 🥩 So flavorful and comforting every time. The cocktails are good too 🍹 Sadly, I rarely have photos of the Thai food because I always start craving it and eat right away 😋🤤 The service is always good, and the other side of the restaurant has an amazing atmosphere too (if it’s open)!
Close to 4 stars. Sushi roll was good, curry excellent, vegetarian dumplings also very good. Not impressed with the Pad see, and scallion pancake had no scallions.
We had the Red Curry and Royal Broccoli. Both tasted very good. The huge issue here is that rice doesn’t come with any of the dishes. You have to pay an extra $2 for a very small side of rice. The worst part is that this is a “promotional …
I ordered the Green Curry with seafood for lunch, and it was outstanding. The curry was creamy, flavorful, and had the perfect level of spice. While there’s an extra charge for the seafood protein, it was absolutely worth the price - the seafood was incredibly fresh and tasty. Highly recommend!
