Papa Haydn is a fine dining restaurant at 5829 SE Milwaukie Ave in Portland, OR 97202. With a 4.5-star rating from 1,439 reviews, it is a local option for guests looking for a sit-down meal, a sweet treat, or an occasion to enjoy both. Visitor comments describe experiences ranging from dinner service to afternoon tea, drinks, and dessert, making the restaurant relevant for more than one kind of outing. Hours are not listed in the information available here, so check current details before planning a visit.
Dessert is a particular draw in the customer feedback. Guests mention seasonal blackberry cheesecake, carrot cake, raspberry chocolate gateau, and Papa Haydn’s famous Paplova. One visitor who stopped in for drinks and dessert said the selection lived up to a friend’s recommendation and tried all four desserts. These are customer-reported favorites rather than a guarantee of what will be available on any given day; the blackberry cheesecake, in particular, was described as seasonal. For anyone choosing a place around dessert, Papa Haydn offers several specific sweets to look for and ask about.
The menu also draws attention for savory dishes. One diner praised a warm cauliflower salad, noting its curry flavor and butternut squash purée, and appreciated that the server checked with the kitchen about how it was prepared. Another visitor stopped in for afternoon tea and pastries while their husband ordered a burger. These details suggest options for guests seeking a full meal as well as those looking for a lighter visit, tea, or a pastry. Because menu items and preparations can change, guests with particular preferences can ask the staff what is currently being served.
Service accounts are mixed, which is useful context when deciding whether Papa Haydn suits a particular visit. Several reviewers praised knowledgeable, attentive staff: one appreciated a server’s clear menu descriptions, while another credited Steve with helping make an anniversary vacation memorable through service, food, and dessert choices. Other feedback describes service that fell short, so individual experiences may vary. The range of comments makes it reasonable to arrive with your plans in mind and ask questions about dishes or the dessert selection. Papa Haydn may suit Portland diners planning dinner, afternoon tea, a dessert stop, or a celebratory meal at a fine dining restaurant on SE Milwaukie Avenue.

We went around 6pm and had Candyse as our server. She did a wonderful job describing the items on the menu and even took the time to ask the kitchen how the warm cauliflower salad was prepared, because it had the best curry flavor and butternut squash purée. Surprisingly light flavor so you were able to appreciate the vegetable underneath. Our table split that with the steak frites, and a café chocolat for dessert. The steak was tender and well seasoned (med rare). The fries were notable for being crispy and not dry, overdone, or greasy. Those were so great with the aioli. The dessert was a mocha lovers dream. I personally favored the mousse and ganache. The brownie base is dense and decadent. We sat on the patio with the lovely garden and tall hedges that softened the noise from surrounding tables. You couldn’t even tell there was a main road on the opposite side. We left full but not uncomfortably so, and ended up bringing the lemon chiffon cake and pumpkin cremeux home for a second dessert.
Stopped by for drinks and dessert and was not disappointed! A friend told me that Papa Haydn's has the best dessert in Portland anf after my visit I strongly agree! We tried the seasonal blackberry cheesecake, the carrot cake, the raspberry chocolate gateau and their famous Paplova. Everything was incredible! They also had amazing outdoor seating!
We stopped by this place for afternoon tea and some pastries. My husband tried the burger as well. Everything was okay, but nothing special to be honest—neither bad nor amazing. However, the server was incredibly cool and really knew their stuff!"
The service was unfortunately very disappointing. Carrie’s attitude completely changed once we let her know we weren’t interested in ordering drinks. After that, she barely checked on us, didn’t come back to see how we were doing, and left …
This review is long overdue! Shoutout to Steve for making our anniversary vacation a memorable one with his excellent service, good food, and a wide selection of delectable desserts! We’ll be back again! Thank you! 💝
