Sign in to reviewWe’re visiting from Seattle, and our friend took us to this amazing Laos restaurant. The food was delicious and authentic — full of flavor and beautifully presented. Nan was our server and she takes a very good care of us. We truly enjoyed every dish and the warm hospitality. Highly recommended!

Today we were in the mood to try a cuisine that was completely new to us, so we decided on Lao food. Yesterday someone at a Vietnamese sandwich shop recommended a place called Pha Kao Lao Cuisine, and we were intrigued enough to visit. While we have dined at many restaurants that serve both Lao and Thai dishes, it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between the two unless the menu clearly identifies them. This restaurant, however, focuses solely on Lao cuisine, which made the experience especially enjoyable and distinct. Pha Kao Lao Cuisine is located in a large strip mall in the City Heights area of San Diego. The moment we walked in, we were impressed by how beautifully decorated and spacious the restaurant was. There are several seating options suitable for both small and large groups, and the overall atmosphere felt warm and welcoming. The service was excellent from the start. We were greeted immediately and invited to choose our preferred seating. The staff members were courteous, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the menu. They explained the differences between Lao and Thai dishes and answered all of our questions with patience and clarity. The food was delicious, and it became clear how different a primarily Lao restaurant feels compared to places that blend Lao and Thai offerings. The flavors were lighter, more herbal, and refreshingly distinct. We began with two appetizers. Yor Juen, a fried spring roll made with ground pork, noodles, and vegetables, was crisp, light, and full of flavor. It was my first time trying this dish, and it was excellent. We also ordered Yor Kao, made with mushrooms, glass noodles, egg, fresh herbs, and ground pork. It was fresh, delicate, and quietly refreshing. Both appetizers were served with a peanut dipping sauce that complemented them well. For our main dishes, we ordered the Tom Kem Pirk, a savory pork dish with eggs. The pork was tender, the eggs were a wonderful addition, and the broth was both herbal and deeply flavorful. It was served with rice and made for a comforting, satisfying dish. We also tried the Pad Woon Sen with tofu, a stir‑fried glass noodle dish. It was light, aromatic, and full of herbal flavor without feeling heavy. Overall, we had a fantastic experience. The food was delicious, light, and full of character. The staff was warm and helpful, the restaurant was beautifully decorated and spacious, and the menu prices were very reasonable. We look forward to returning to try more dishes.
The food tastes really good. Portion is huge! Make sure to share 😆 my brother is a regular there and I was in town. Clean and easy to find parking. Service was friendly and fast. I will definitely go back next time I’m in SD.
Whoa. 🔥🔥🔥🔥 I love spicy food. But ordering medium here was super spicy. And it would’ve been fine if there was flavor to it but I couldn’t taste the actual food whixh usually means it’s probably pretty bland. My partner who can’t candle spicy enjoyed the pad ped red curry which surprisingly was the least spicy thing of the 4 items we ordered.
