Customer feedback gives the restaurant a 4.5-star rating across 459 reviews. Hours are not listed in the available business information, so check current hours before making a special trip.
The menu highlights include pho, Bo Kho, and Crying Tiger, giving diners several distinct dishes to consider. Bo Kho stands out in customer recommendations: one reviewer calls it the move and praises its caliber, while another specifically recommends returning to try more of the menu. Pho also draws mixed but useful feedback. Some guests enjoy its broth and a pleasantly spicy kick; another found the broth clear but wanted more depth. These differing impressions make it sensible to choose according to your own taste rather than expect every bowl to land the same way.
Crying Tiger is another dish that gets a direct recommendation. A diner describes the flank steak as cooked perfectly and enjoys the restaurant’s fusion approach. Thai tea is also mentioned positively by a customer who stopped in late. Together, these reviews suggest a menu with recognizable comfort-food choices and distinctive preparations, alongside drinks that can round out a meal. If you are deciding what to order, Bo Kho and Crying Tiger are especially useful starting points based on the specific praise customers have shared.
The setting is part of the appeal. Guests describe street-food and cocktail vibes, with backlit openings in dark walls creating a distinctive, dim atmosphere. Reviewers also mention enjoying the chance to try different dishes on repeat visits. That makes Short Round / Crying Tigers a fit for friends looking for an informal dinner, diners curious about fusion-style flavors, and people who want a lively bar setting without separating drinks from the meal. The ambiance is atmospheric rather than described as bright or formal.
Late-night availability is a recurring theme in customer reviews, including one account of being welcomed at the bar around 11:30 p.m. after a long shift, even as staff were handling closing duties. That personal experience points to considerate service, though it should not be taken as a guarantee of current hours or seating. For anyone exploring Portland dining around Hawthorne, Short Round / Crying Tigers offers a memorable mix of Bo Kho, pho, Crying Tiger, Thai tea, and cocktails in a distinctive setting. Check the latest operating details before visiting, and come ready to choose among dishes that guests have enjoyed in different ways.

pretty good for a late night spot but not the best ever. thai tea was nice!! the pho broth was clear but lacked flavor and depth
The move is the Bo Kho. I ASSURE YOU. Yr not catching this soup anywhere else in Portland, maybe on the west coast, not this caliber. And they’re open late night. I’ll be a fixture. Go out of yr way to come here.
I came in on my way home after a very long shift. The bartender with tattoos (I regret not asking your name!) was so kind and nice to me; even while doing their closing duties, they let me sit and eat at the bar (the first time I’d eaten since like 3pm?). This was at 11:30pm(ish) and I was so grateful. I got the sweet potatoes that tasted like actual sweet potatoes, fresh, and my fried rice (no pork) was one of the best fried rice I've ever had if not of all time. So flavorful and delicious! Literally couldn’t stop eating. addicted. Will definitely be back.
Wonderful street food and cocktail vibes.... backlit holes in the dark walls give a delightful ambiance to a Short Round visit. Every time we drop in, we make an attempt to try something different, and I have yet to be disappointed. I've …
Super solid spot. Love that it’s open late. We got the pho and the crying tiger. I loved it!! The pho broth was great and surprisingly spicy. The flank steak was cooked perfectly on the crying tiger. I definitely want to go back and try the rest of their means the cocktails. I loved the fusion takes on the classics. Wish I got more pics but we ate so fast!
