St. Augustine Catholic Church is a Catholic church in Oakland, CA, located at 400 Alcatraz Ave in a neighborhood that serves families, long-time parishioners, and first-time visitors alike. With a 4.5-star rating from 26 reviews, it stands out as a place where people notice the tone of welcome as much as the worship itself. For anyone searching for a faith community in Oakland, California, this parish offers a grounded, local presence and a clear sense of care.

A recurring theme in visitor feedback is how inclusive and family-friendly the community feels. One reviewer described a diverse, welcoming community and noted that the church is especially considerate of families with infants. Practical touches like a rocking chair in the back for discreet nursing and soothing a baby, along with children's books, crayons, and paper available during Mass, show that the church is attentive to the needs of parents and young children. That kind of environment can make a real difference for families looking for a parish where children are not just tolerated, but thoughtfully included.

The church also appears to be a place where people come for support, learning, and spiritual growth. A visitor sharing their first church experience said they were glad to have been introduced to this particular church and that it helped them become more educated and informed about topics they had long avoided. They also mentioned being guided by someone who helped them grow and understand life better. That suggests St. Augustine Catholic Church is more than a Sunday gathering place; it is a parish where people can ask questions, reflect, and be accompanied in their faith journey.

Several reviews also point to the warmth of the staff and the congregation during important moments in life. One person attended a homegoing service and described the staff as warm, loving, kind, and transparent, adding that everyone was friendly and welcoming during a difficult time. For families and individuals navigating grief, that kind of steady, compassionate presence matters. It reflects a parish atmosphere that is respectful, caring, and rooted in service.

For those looking for a Catholic church in Oakland, CA that feels accessible, sincere, and community-oriented, St. Augustine Catholic Church offers a meaningful option. Its weekday hours, from Monday through Thursday morning, make it approachable for people who need to stop in during the workweek. Whether you are a parent with small children, someone exploring the Catholic faith, or a family seeking a parish for liturgy and life events, this Oakland church is remembered for its welcoming spirit and thoughtful care.

Diverse, welcoming community. Very family friendly, especially for families with infants. There's a rocking chair in the back where I could discreetly nurse and sooth my baby. They also often have children's books, crayons, and paper for kids to entertain themselves during mass.

I am sad to say that my long time parish (23 years) has undergone a dramatic change as a result of having 4 pastors in as few years. The latest priest fired all the ministry staff a few months after taking the reins. Would Jesus do this? The bishop allowed this unchristian action to take place. I honor the parishioners who have stayed and tried to make the best of the situation (particularly our dedicated choir). But I could not continue as a member. The ministry focus seems to be a pre-Vatican one of personal piety, and the references in the Facebook page are to conservative Catholic publications and figures. What happened to our focus on social justice and the larger community. To say nothing of respect for Catholic feminist issues. Please keep all those who lost their jobs, the current staff, and the parishioners in your prayers.

first church experience... glad I was turned on to this church in particular... helping me to become more educated and informed on subject matter i have always turned away from... coming to understand life better... especially mr.mitchell who has taken me under his wing and is guiding me to be a better version of me... eternally grateful for him being a part of my life... everyone including the congregation has extended blessings of good faith towards me, helping me out with love and compassion in a time where I was very lost

I was there for a homegoing service. Staff was very warm, loving, kind and transparent. Considering why I was there - EVERYONE was friendly and welcoming. That made a difference.

O Mary, when Jesus was conceived in you, He found you a Virgin. After being born of you, He left you a Virgin. He gives you fertility, but He does not violate your integrity. Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church (354-430 A.D.)
