Tom Dwyer Automotive Services is an auto repair shop in Portland, Oregon, at 8211 SE 6th Ave, Portland, OR 97202. For drivers looking for a local shop for maintenance, diagnosis, or a second look at a vehicle’s condition, customer feedback points to a practical approach: clear explanations, straightforward recommendations, and estimates shared before work moves forward. The shop has a 4.7-star rating from 239 reviews. Customers describe returning over multiple years and bringing different vehicles, including a manual-transmission car and a hybrid, making the business a familiar option for a range of Portland drivers.

Reviews frequently highlight honest, thorough service and communication that feels respectful rather than pushy. Customers say the team explains which repairs are needed and which can wait, provides upfront estimates, and gets in touch when unexpected issues arise. One reviewer appreciated having a long-owned, older car cared for over several years; another described bringing in a recently purchased vehicle for an inspection, after which the shop identified serious safety concerns and recommended having it towed. These accounts suggest that Tom Dwyer Automotive Services can be useful when you want a professional assessment before deciding how to proceed.

The customer experiences shared also mention diagnosing a water leak and arranging a comprehensive vehicle examination at a discounted rate. That does not mean every repair or inspection has the same price or outcome, so it is sensible to discuss your vehicle’s symptoms, priorities, and estimate with the shop directly. Still, the reviews offer concrete examples of customers seeking help with both a specific problem and a broader checkup. Several reviewers say they have recommended the shop to family and friends, and value the team’s kind, considerate way of discussing service needs.

Tom Dwyer Automotive Services is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; it is closed Sunday. Its weekday schedule may suit routine visits, while the shorter Saturday hours offer another option for Portland-area drivers. Whether you are maintaining an older car, asking about a warning sign, or seeking an inspection after buying a vehicle, the shop’s reviews emphasize communication and informed decisions. Contact the team to confirm availability, describe the work you need, and ask what to expect before your visit.

I've been going to Tom Dwyer since at least 2018 across two different vehicles (manual transmission & hybrid ev). They've always given me good service, straightforward advice, and a good price. I recommend them to all my friends & family.

I have taken my, now 16 year old, car for 5 years since moving here. It is by far one of the best , most reliable, honest , reasonable ,thorough car service centers. Communication is clear and respectful , never pushy. Ii have referred family members without hesitation.

I found Tom Dwyer Auto via raving reviews on Reddit and decided to give them a shot to try to diagnose the source of my water leak. I also added a comprehensive exam (which they offered at a discounted rate) for them to look at my car as a whole and to let me know what things might need repair now and in the near future. They were able to see my car within a week of me reaching out for an appt, and they only kept my car for ~5 hours. They tried everything they could to find the source of my leak, but when they couldn't, they referred me to Liberty Water Leak, who was fantastic and found the sources of my leak and water damage within a few hours. With the comprehensive exam, they listed each item that needed repair and were not pushy AT ALL. They also answered all of my questions, yes... even the dumb ones. 😅 There was an oversight where my wiper cowlings were not installed correctly, so I did leave an honest review on SureCritic saying that I wasn't sure if I'd trust them with further repairs due to that mistake. Within a week of posting that review, the shop called me to apologize and discuss what happened. On top of that, they refunded me my entire bill. I understand now why Tom Dwyer Auto has such good reviews-- They genuinely care about their customers and producing quality work. I am grateful to have been treated with respect, not taken advantage of as a female, and for their determination to correct the mistakes made. Thank you again!

Tom Dwyer’s mechanic shop is where I’ll be going as long as I’m in Portland. I recently bought a vehicle from a dealer that supposedly was “ready to be driven”. I got it inspected at Tom Dwyer’s and they discovered multiple critical safety issues with the vehicle, and recommended I get it towed. So I did. I am now trying to get my money back from this sketchy dealer. Thank God I got it inspected, otherwise my wife would have been driving in an unsafe vehicle. Thank you Tom Dwyer and the team! I spoke with Casey at the shop, and he’s great. He was like my therapist throughout my whole stressful situation these last couple of days - sorry Casey!! I can’t recommend this shop enough. Honest folks, and very dependable. My car was so bad; they didn’t even charge me for the inspection!!

The folks at Tom Dwyer are great at explaining the services needed/not needed, always give upfront estimates, communicate if they find any unforeseen issues. Everyone I've dealt with is super kind and respectful. As a female, I've often encountered service professionals talking down to me and/or assuming I don't know much about cars (I don't), and using that as a reason not to be transparent with pricing, labor, etc. I don't need to make my boyfriend cone with me to get service at TD. I don't need to be the expert (that's their job!), because they take the time to help me understand the basics well enough to make choices about what to prioritize, and they charge fair prices for their work. Also, they have lots of cool geodes in the shop, and PDX carpet in the waiting area!
