Vientiane Bistro is a Thai restaurant on Kensington Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at 2537 Kensington Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125. Its name may suggest a different cuisine, but diners describe the food as Thai, with Lao-inspired comfort food also represented on the menu. For people looking for a neighborhood restaurant with fragrant, satisfying dishes and welcoming service, Vientiane Bistro offers a distinctive place to dine in or order a meal to go. The restaurant is rated 4.6 out of 5 from 195 reviews, reflecting many customers’ positive experiences.

One memorable specialty is Kow Piek Sen, a Lao-style handmade rice noodle soup that a returning customer calls a favorite. It is topped with bean sprouts, cilantro, scallions, and crispy fried garlic, bringing together fresh herbs, savory broth, and a crunchy finish. A reviewer with Khmer and Lao roots describes the food as especially authentic and says the generous portions and friendly staff make the restaurant feel like a place from home. Those comments make the bistro appealing to diners seeking familiar Southeast Asian flavors as well as newcomers eager to explore them.

Penang curry with crispy tofu is another customer favorite, praised for its flavor and satisfying texture. Reviews also describe the cooking as consistently delicious and highlight staff recommendations that helped make a meal memorable. Guests looking for bold Thai flavors, a warming noodle soup, or a meat-free curry option may find something to enjoy here. One customer also reports that the team took extra care with a gluten-related question, leaving a voicemail to clarify which items to avoid. That account offers a useful example of attentive communication, though diners with allergies should still confirm ingredients and preparation directly with the restaurant.

The dining room has been described by a guest as beautiful, while the service is frequently praised as friendly and excellent. Customers mention both dining in and ordering to go; one reviewer chose takeout after feeling uncertain about parking nearby. As with any city visit, it can be helpful to consider your own transportation and parking plans before arriving. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is closed Sundays. Checking directly with Vientiane Bistro for current details is sensible, especially when planning around a particular dish or dietary need.

Whether you live in Philadelphia or are exploring Kensington, Vientiane Bistro is a local option for Thai cooking, Lao-style Kow Piek Sen, and Penang curry with crispy tofu. Its combination of generous portions, personable service, and dishes that regulars return for makes it suitable for a relaxed meal, a familiar comfort-food stop, or a convenient takeout order. Reviews point to a welcoming experience and cooking with plenty of flavor rather than a formal occasion. For anyone searching for a Thai restaurant in Philadelphia, this Kensington Avenue address is a concrete place to consider.

I’ve been coming here for quite some time now, and I can confidently say the food has always been consistently delicious. I usually order the Kow Piek Sen — a Lao-style handmade rice noodle soup topped with bean sprouts, cilantro, scallions, and crispy fried garlic. It’s been my go-to favorite for a while. Today, I decided to switch things up and try the Khaopoon King soup, and I’m so glad I did — it has officially earned a spot among my favorites. Shoutout to Mariah for encouraging me to try something new! The atmosphere is always clean, calm, and inviting. The space is beautifully decorated with real flowers and softly lit candles, which adds such a nice touch. The bathroom is consistently spotless too — and honestly, that’s usually how you can tell a place takes pride in their food and service! I didn’t get a chance to take a photo of the soup this time, but I did order a papaya salad and had it made extra spicy — just how I like it. Next time I visit, I’ll be sure to update with pictures and a more detailed review. Definitely a hidden gem. 💛

This place is FIRE! It is under the bridge but it’s safe, the inside of this restaurant is beautiful. The food is incredible. The service is excellent. The cook top notch. The recommendations did not disappoint. Let me put it this way, everything I had tonight was a flavor bomb. The restaurant is a true gem. I do a ton of ratings, have worked in the food industry and with celebrity chefs, well traveled etc etc….. EAT here!

I thought it was a Vietnamese restaurant, but it turned out to be Thai. The food is authentic Thai flavor. The location isn't great, so I didn't dare park my car nearby and had to eat in. So I got it to go.

Love this place so much!!! They’re great with allergies especially gluten. They left me a voicemail to confirm what contained gluten in my order that I should steer clear of. I love their Penang curry with crispy tofu! Absolutely delicious and fast delivery!
