VNA Rest Home is a retirement home at 186 Highland Ave in Somerville, Massachusetts. For families looking into senior living in Somerville, the experiences shared by residents’ relatives and visitors offer a useful glimpse of the home. Reviewers describe a clean, welcoming setting and staff members who are friendly and helpful. One family member says their mother’s room is cozy and pretty, while another visitor recalls being impressed by the cleanliness of the building. These personal accounts suggest a place where comfort and a cared-for environment matter.

Food is one detail that comes through in a resident’s family review: the reviewer says their mother enjoys the meals. Rather than pointing to a particular menu or signature dish, this feedback offers a simple, firsthand impression of dining at VNA Rest Home. Families considering a retirement home can ask the team directly about meal options, dietary needs, room arrangements, and the kinds of daily support available. Those conversations can help determine whether the setting fits an older adult’s preferences and care needs.

The reviews also emphasize the importance of attentive support. One person describes a dear friend who lived at the home during the final year and a half of her life and appreciated the care she received. Another reviewer recommends that families of an older adult on a fixed income who needs around-the-clock nursing care look into the location, while cautioning that the wait list can be long. These are individual experiences rather than a guarantee of availability or a description of every resident’s care plan, so prospective residents should contact VNA Rest Home to discuss current services, eligibility, costs, and timing.

A family account also recalls the Little Sisters of the Poor providing kindness and support during a difficult night when a staff member’s father died. That memory speaks to the personal significance that the home and its people have held for some families over the years. VNA Rest Home has a listed rating of 4.4 from 33 reviews, alongside a mix of recent and longstanding recollections. The posted hours show the location as open every day, around the clock; families should confirm current visiting arrangements and any practical details directly before making plans.

For older adults and families comparing retirement homes in Somerville, VNA Rest Home may be worth learning about when a clean environment, a comfortable room, helpful staff, and ongoing care are priorities. Reviews point to meaningful experiences, but every person’s needs are different. A conversation with the home can help clarify whether it is a suitable option, what support is currently offered, and whether there is space available.

My Mother Marion worked here in 1983. The Mothers and Sisters were so good to us especially the night my father died. My mother was working that night and the staff from Little.Sisters of the Poor took such great care of our family. God Bless ~ Queen Victoria of Savoy

I had a very dear friend who was able to take up residency at this location. She lived there for the last 1.5 years of her life and was especially appreciative for the wonderful care she received there. I visited her multiple times and was always impressed by how clean everything was in the building. Bea Murphy was a very holy woman and being received into this wonderful place was an answer to her prayers! Bea wrote the prayer on the back of the prayer card entitled: Our Lady of Gentle Love. That prayer card (over a million printed) has been distributed throughout the world. The artist who painted Our Lady was at that time a resident at the Little Sisters of the Poor in Somerville. This facility is the model of kindness, respect, and dignity for every one of its residents. I know this firsthand -- first through Bea and then by my own experience visiting her. ,

August 21, 2014 My experience of Little Sisters of the Poor has been uniformly wonderful. My mother, Virginia Stafford, lived in subsidized housing in Boston before she moved to her birthplace- Somerville, MA. In fact, prior to living on Highland Avenue, she lived on Kilmarnock Street in Boston where she feared taking elevators. But, at Little Sisters she found a very welcoming safe, home. I have been to several events there, and everyone seemed so cheerful. Once, when I visited my mother, I took home a book that described various homes that Little Sisters manages. That little booklet was filled with photographs of people with smiling faces. Thank you to all the many people who have taken such good care of my mother during her five-year stay at Little Sisters. Your staff was truly a God-send. Addendum: One particular day when I tried to visit my mother, one of the sisters stopped me from doing so. As I sat outside and reflected on that particular nuns' odd behavior, I silently asked myself this question: did my mother not want to see me and did she relay that message to the nun? - (during a phone call with my mother, I notified her of the time I was refused entrance and she told me that she wasn't aware of my visiting that day). As a result of that earlier visit, Little Sisters of the Poor is effectively demoted to three stars by this writer.
