This is the original Voodoo Doughnut, which opened in 2003, right in Portland’s Old Town Chinatown, just steps from the Chinatown Gateway and Ankeny Alley. Voodoo is known for favorites like the Bacon Maple Bar, Voodoo Doll, Old Dirty Bastard, Portland Cream, and Oh Captain, My Captain. I didn’t get any of those, though. Instead, I opted for the Mango Tango doughnut. It was good and super sweet. I should’ve gotten some of the favorites too but held myself back. One thing I really enjoyed was the spinning carousel displays featuring a variety of specialty doughnuts. Fortunately, I didn’t encounter a long line during my visit. The staff was friendly and moved things along quickly. The shop itself is pretty much standing-room-only, with no tables inside, but there’s a large plaza and alley area right outside where you can sit or stand and enjoy your doughnuts. There’s lot of art on the walls and a huge doughnut art piece hanging from the ceiling. Just outside the front door is the Ankeny Alley Stage, a small outdoor stage where buskers, bands, and other performers provide live entertainment. A nearby sign features a QR code with the performance schedule. During my visit, a musician was riffing on his guitar. Seemed as though he was warming up and he was really good! Definitely a fun and uniquely Portland stop—and of course, I had to experience the original!
Cool donut place — very pink — and sometimes there’s a line to get in. The staff at the counter were great and friendly. I loved the wildberry and mango ones, even though they’re very heavy and sugary. Definitely an experience.
I love Voodoo Doughnuts in especially their Portland location! There’s something for everyone, and the funny names and unique combinations make picking them out part of the fun. The apple fritter and maple bar are my go-to favorites, but if you want to try something a little different, the Old Dirty Bastard is delicious! I also appreciate that they have a good variety of vegan options. The hardest part is deciding how many doughnuts to leave with! 🍩
Creative, Memorable, and Unmistakably Portland I had the chance to visit Voodoo Doughnut in Old Town, and it’s clear why this …
Personally I’m not a donut fan. I’ve visited another location but not this one. I prob won’t come back to this one as there’s no free parking. There’s pay street parking though. I was one of the few customers when i visited. It was a quick visit. I ordered a maple bacon, a Memphis Mafia and an Old Fashion Bastard. They are big but they are also more expensive than other donut shops. They are very rich and sweet. I could only eat a tiny bite of Memphis Mafia (peanut and chocolate chip on top of apple fritter) and that was enough for me. I liked the combination of chocolate peanut butter but not so good on top of an apple fritter.
