The new scam playbook is not some guy with a blurry flyer taped to a pole. It is cleaner now. A fake service business can have a nice-looking profile, a pile of suspicious five-star reviews, a rented phone number, and a name that sounds just local enough.
That is why people get played.

The scam does not always start with a huge lie. Sometimes it starts with a normal search: emergency plumber near me, cheap AC repair, locksmith open now, mover available today. You are stressed, in a hurry, and ready to call whoever answers first.
That is exactly when you need to slow down.
The fake review pattern
Fake reviews often sound weirdly polished or weirdly empty. Ten reviews in two days. Same tone. Same short phrases. No photos. No service details. A bunch of people saying “great company” but nobody saying what was actually done.
Real reviews usually have texture. They mention the tech’s name, the issue, the price range, the timing, or whether the job held up.

The emergency upcharge trick
Some shady providers win the call by quoting low. Then they show up and suddenly the price jumps. The problem is “worse than expected.” The part is “special.” The fee is “standard.” You are standing there with a leak, no AC, or a locked door, so you pay.
Before anyone comes out, ask:
- Is there a service call fee?
- Does that fee apply to the repair?
- Can you give a price range before arrival?
- Are you licensed or insured where required?
- What name will show up on the invoice?
If they get annoyed by basic questions, that is a red flag.
The name game
Scammy operators sometimes use generic names that sound like the official local option: City Fast Locksmith, Best Emergency Plumbing, Local AC Pros. Not always fake, but generic names deserve a second look.
Search the phone number. Search the address. See if the business name changes across sites.
A legit business leaves a trail
A real provider usually has a footprint: consistent contact info, real reviews over time, photos that match the work, and some way to verify who they are.
Use the FindALoco directory as one checkpoint, then compare with reviews and the business’s own website or social profiles. Do not let one shiny listing do all the talking.
Scams work best when you are rushed. The fix is not paranoia. It is a quick pause before money leaves your pocket.
