Đức Viên Buddhist Temple

I visited this Vietnamese Buddhist temple on my way to a friend’s house in San Jose. I was pleasantly surprised by how colorful it was, with bright decorations reflecting traditional Asian styles. The temple is a decent size, though it felt a little crowded, especially in the front and side yards. The inside of the temple is quite nice, and they hold weekly Buddhist lectures in Vietnamese. It looks like this temple is very active and well supported in the neighborhood.

I've been to Duc Vien Temple multiple times! It's one of the best places to worship Buddha, pray and meditate. Normally on Sunday at lunch time, there will be a vegan food market where you can buy delicious pre-made vegan food to donate for the temple and nuns. I came here all the time, not just because I wanted to pray but also to savor the best Vietnamese vegan dishes. The food here are just chef's kiss, some of the dishes I suggest you to try are vegan bun Hue, corn sweet dessert, Vietnamese sandwiches (some days they have it), vegan spring rolls. They're all affordable, $15 for noodle dishes, $5 for sweet treats, $7 for spring rolls. Rice dishes are complimentary in Buddha's spirit (but do help temple's works in return for the food). Even though they're cash only, they do accept Zelle as payment. Also, this peaceful place has a very serene garden, beautiful latern decorations. You should visit this place during lunar new year or mid autumn festival because the temple is best decorated during that time. My family and I have visited Chùa Đức Viên in San Jose several times, and each visit feels like a unique and cherished experience. The temple's serene environment and beautiful architecture create a peaceful atmosphere for meditation and reflection. With its golden statues of Buddha, intricate decorations, and vibrant flowers, the temple is not only visually stunning but also spiritually uplifting. Every time we step into the temple, it feels like a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The community at Chùa Đức Viên is incredibly welcoming and supportive. We've had the pleasure of participating in various programs and services, such as spiritual guidance and community outreach activities. The monks and staff members are always attentive and kind, making each visit feel special. During our visits, we also enjoy the festive booths set up for celebrations like Tết, which add to the cultural richness of the temple. One booth, in particular, was beautifully decorated for the Vietnamese Lunar New Year (Tết) celebration. It featured a vibrant and festive atmosphere with yellow flowers, red banners with Vietnamese text, and a large red diamond-shaped sign with the word "Tết" in the center. Other decorative elements included a small table with vases, a lion dance mask, and green and red patterned boxes. String lights were hung around the booth, adding to the festive ambiance. Visiting Chùa Đức Viên is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that leaves a lasting impression on one's soul. The temple's serene environment, beautiful architecture, and welcoming community make it a gem in San Jose. I came during Chinese Lunar New Year and Vietnamese Tet festivals. The temple is decorated beautifully. It also brought us a Vietnamese temple vibes atmosphere here where many people pays a visit to Budha temple in the beginning of a new year for good luck. Many great Budha statues. They also offer vegetarian food in exchange for donations.
