Mai Hair Story

I’m extremely disappointed with my experience. I came in asking for a warm brown balayage, even showed them a reference photo (first pic below), and somehow ended up with a cool-toned “rose mocha” balayage I never asked for. The stylist kept insisting it looked good on me and I was never asked for approval before they posted my hair on their Instagram(if you see this please delete it). Yes it looks nice on picture they posted but again i never asked this color this is cool tone color i asked for warm tone balayage. Even initial color “rose mocha” lasted for a day now its just gray patchy yellow idk what color it is now. They also didn’t even brush off the hair after the hair cut. I paid almost $500, drove over 30 minutes to get there, and left feeling unheard, overcharged, and extremely frustrated. This was not a custom experience—it felt like they just did whatever they wanted regardless of what I asked for. I would not recommend this salon and definitely won’t be coming back.

I’ve lived in the LA/OC area for a long time and have tried several hair salons with different hairstylists, but by far MJ is the best. I had a haircut with her last year, and I decided to go back to her for a second time. She really understands what I want and takes her time to create a precise, detailed cut. She carefully cut my hair and made sure everything was perfect. And I love her personality. she’s warm, friendly, and makes the whole experience enjoyable. Thank you so much I absolutely love my haircut! It’s so much easier to maintain now. I highly recommend her.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience here made me feel genuinely uncomfortable and embarrassed. Throughout the appointment, my stylist and another stylist repeatedly criticized my hair, commenting on how “damaged,” “terrible,” and “so bad” it was while sighing during the process. While I understand stylists may need to discuss hair condition professionally, the way it was communicated felt judgmental rather than helpful. What made the experience worse was the cold attitude throughout the appointment — my stylist never smiled once or made any effort to create a welcoming or comfortable environment. I left feeling judged instead of cared for. Ironically, the service still worked out in the end, which shows my hair clearly wasn’t beyond terrible. But customer experience matters just as much as the final result, and no client should feel embarrassed in the chair.

I had a pretty negative experience with this place. I had a straight perm to have a clean look prior to my visit, but since wanted to give natural waves (C curl via iron, aka "i-long perm" in Korea) to frontal hair only. The stylist (Mai) said she will just take care of it in her own accord after we agreed C curl will be too damaging. I'm not sure if stylist was paying attention but she basically gave me "aunty's perm" in the entire hair, basically deleting all the straight perm i've done on sides. It looked pretty ridiculous, and the damage was the entire hair not the frontal. When i expressed my discontent, she promptly applied chemicals to cancel the perm but there was so much damage overall. I'm not sure why this happened, as I booked specifically on a weekday to avoid rush hours. No proper apology or discount was given. The smell lasted for a few days. I wouldn't particularly recommend this place if you want hair done properly. The total came out to 150$ ish, which was really pricey for the poor quality work.

My first time at Mai Hair Story! I had a great time at their salon. The owner, Mai, and other staff were so friendly and nice. :) I got the color exactly as I requested! The salon is cute, with plenty of parking space in the back. I also appreciated the fitting room where you can change into a gown to keep your clothes clean. Thank you, Mai Hair Story!! 💕
