A stunning and authentic Teochew Buddhist temple in the heart of Houston's Chinatown. The intricate craftsmanship, vibrant colors, and traditional Chinese architecture are truly breathtaking. It’s a very peaceful and spiritual place that makes you feel like you've stepped into another world. Definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in culture and architecture!
We stopped by Teo Chew Temple for Lunar New Years last February to pray & wish for blessings for the New Year. This temple is really huge. It's a popular temple with nice Buddhist statues of different Gods. It's a nice temple, but the inside can be a fire hazard since there's so much smoke coming from everyone's incenses whenever people pray. Aside from that, it is a nice temple.
This temple was very quiet and relaxing. It is open to the public, but they still request that masks be worn, so please be respectful. Being able to walk around and take in the art and sculptures was a humbling experience. If I were to critique anything it's the men's bathroom. It just isn't maintained very well and needs some TLC.
I’ve been coming here for years and have always thought the temple is beautiful and very well kept. I’ll be honest in saying that I’m not well versed in all of the formalities, and English is my primary language. I understand and acknowledge that some cultural nuances and processes don’t translate perfectly, so please forgive me if I’m mistaken. However, I recently experienced something that didn’t sit right with me. One of the volunteer workers told me that our group had to give a red envelope directly to them. His exact words were, “đi nói ông phải đưa tôi lì xì.” In the past, we’ve always placed our donations in the donation boxes out front before (or occasionally after) we pray. I was actually in the middle of doing so at the time, and with everything going on, I didn’t have the energy to question the volunteer in that moment or ask why it was being presented that way. I completely understand and respect the tradition of making offerings or donations, and we have always been happy to contribute. However, being directly told that we had to give a red envelope to an individual felt unusual to me. If there is a specific custom or expectation around this that I may not be aware of, I would genuinely appreciate clarification. I’m sharing this in the hope that the temple can clarify the proper process so that visitors and families can feel comfortable and confident about how donations and offerings should be handled.
Beautiful and serene temple. They were extremely welcoming to a bunch of tourists. It was empty when we were there except for two temple workers. There's even a QR code by the door that you can scan for information about the temple..
