Ben Thanh Supermarket is a supermarket at 5520 Whitaker Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19124, serving shoppers looking for Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian groceries in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Customer reviews describe a Vietnamese- and Thai-focused selection, with some Japanese, Korean, and Chinese products as well. That mix can make the store a useful place to browse for familiar pantry staples, ingredients for home cooking, and specialty items that may be harder to find in a conventional grocery store. The store is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., giving local residents a consistent window for weekday or weekend shopping.
Shoppers mention a broad range of Asian grocery items, along with teas, fruits, vegetables, seafood, and a particularly interesting frozen-food section. One reviewer highlights Vietnamese frozen foods and the pleasure of finding both classic products and less familiar discoveries; another visited specifically for tea and appreciated the selection. The frozen aisles may be worth exploring if you are looking for Vietnamese convenience foods or packaged specialties. Because customer experiences differ, it is sensible to check product labels and dates and to assess fresh items in person, especially when choosing seafood or meat.
The market may suit Vietnamese and Southeast Asian households stocking up on ingredients, shoppers curious about regional products, and anyone hoping to compare grocery options around Philadelphia. Its selection also includes items from several other Asian food traditions, which can help when planning meals that call for ingredients from more than one cuisine. Reviews describe substantial customer traffic and a high volume of sales, while feedback on price and freshness is mixed. Some customers appreciate the range and report a positive visit; others say certain prices feel high or raise concerns about the meat counter and seafood freshness. These are individual reports, not guarantees about every product or visit, so shoppers can make their own assessment in store.
Ben Thanh Supermarket has a 4.0-star rating from 749 reviews, offering prospective visitors a broad set of local customer perspectives. For a practical trip, consider coming with a short shopping list, allowing time to browse the frozen section and tea selection, and checking freshness and prices on items where those details matter to you. The address is 5520 Whitaker Ave in Philadelphia, and the store’s daily 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. hours make it straightforward to plan a visit. Good for Southeast asian products. Meat counter area stinks...like rotten meat. Fresh seafood section not so fresh...many of the fishes are just defrosted fish from their frozen section and their "fresh" fish don't look very fresh at all. Other than that its a decent asian market for other things.
One of my favorite spots for Vietnamese frozen foods. Ben Thanh Market always has a great mix of classic and new finds. Their frozen section is especially fun to browse — lots of colorful packaging and items you don’t see everywhere. I was pleasantly surprised to spot some Chuon Chuon (Dragon Fly) brand products during my last visit. Love seeing familiar brands like that on the shelves.
I was pleased with the store. I was mostly in the market for different teas, and they've definitely got a selection, all dated far out. They've definitely got a lot of foot traffic and a great volume of sales. Contrary to some other reviews, I hadn't found the market to be uncleanly. Staff was friendly and aisles are clearly marked in English for non-Asian speaking customers. I will give them five stars. 💫💫💫💫💫
Number 1 Ben City Supermarket is the perfect example of a good Asian supermarket in the Philadelphia area. It has mostly a Vietnamese / Thai focus, but does sell some Japanese, Korean, and Chinese items. A good variety of fresh seafood, fruits and vegetables plus plenty of Asian grocery items. The household ware items are very well stocked and I found many desirable items for my kitchen here.
Everything is ok, lot of fresh sea food. However the price is a little bit high
