Cheese Board Collective Bakery and Cheese Shop is a well-known bakery at 1504 Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley, CA, bringing together a bakery and cheese-shop tradition in one neighborhood stop. Customer feedback describes it as a cooperative that began as a cheese store and has grown into a favorite local destination. Its listed 4.7 rating from 503 reviews reflects the steady appreciation it receives from regulars and visitors alike. For travelers exploring Berkeley or East Bay residents planning a food-focused errand, this is a useful place to pick up breads, pastries, cheese, and more in a central Shattuck Avenue location.

The counter offers the kind of broad American-style bakery selection that reviewers repeatedly associate with Cheese Board: bread, scones, muffins, sweet rolls, olives, and cheese. Among the items mentioned most often are the cheese rolls and sticky buns, while another review points to blueberry muffins. The bakery's appeal is its range rather than a single narrow specialty, making it easy to assemble breakfast, an afternoon treat, or provisions for sharing. Those seeking a distinctly French pastry style should set expectations accordingly; one customer specifically characterizes the baking as American in style. That detail helps guests choose this Berkeley bakery for what it is known for.

A visit is also shaped by the sensory pull of the shop: reviewers mention the aroma that meets you when you walk in, as well as an updated, larger interior. The collective model is another part of the story customers notice, with reviews recognizing the business as socially responsible and remarking on its continued growth. The atmosphere is therefore suited to people who enjoy browsing a neighborhood food shop as much as making a quick, purposeful purchase. Stop in for a favorite roll, select cheeses and olives for home, or choose baked goods for a casual gathering. The adjacent pizzeria gives diners another option nearby, including hot pizza mentioned by customers.

Open Tuesday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Cheese Board Collective Bakery and Cheese Shop fits weekday routines and Saturday neighborhood visits. It is closed Monday and Sunday, so planning ahead is helpful. Whether you are looking for bakery staples, memorable cheese rolls or sticky buns, or a dependable Berkeley stop with a cooperative identity, the shop offers an experience rooted in the items customers return for. Its combination of baked goods, cheese, olives, and an inviting shop setting makes it especially practical for locals, visitors, breakfast seekers, and anyone bringing something good to the table.

The Cheese Board is a co-op that started as a cheese store, but now also has a beloved bakery and pizzeria (next door). If you are visiting Berkeley, you must stop by the Cheese Board. The bakery is one of the best all-around bakeries in the area -- other places in the East Bay may specialize in a certain type of baked good, but the Cheese Board can make everything well (especially if it has cheese!) If stopping by for the bakery, you must try the signature cheese roll. Otherwise, there is a rotating selection of breads and pastries, some of which were "invented" in house and have special names (wolverines, zampanos, chocolate things, etc.). The bakery items are continually made throughout the day. While waiting in line for the bakery, you can also get a selection of cheese and prepared sauces. The $25 Adventure Bag contains a good choice of random cheeses, and the green hot sauce is also tasty as a condiment/dip. You can buy par-baked pizzas to finish baking at home. The pizzas are always vegetarian and change every day. If you're just visiting, you can get a baked pizza at the pizzeria next door instead. The pizza is the best pizza in Berkeley. Everything you can buy here is delicious. You can't go wrong with any of the food choices. --- For first time visitors or a casual stop, I recommend buying a cheese roll, seeded baguette, and any pastry that tickles your fancy. For a more substantial amount of food to bring home, I recommend a pizza, a 6-pack of English muffins, the green sauce, and a cheese Adventure Bag. The green sauce usually goes well on the pizza.

I didnt like cheese roll, especially the unmelted cheese part. The blueberry muffin was very American style. You will like this place if u like American bakery taste but if u looking for French bakery style pastry this is not a place for u u will be disappointed

This is the best cheese store and bakery around. Just the smell of everything when you walk in is amazing. Everything here is excellent, but especially the cheese rolls and sticky buns.

Wow! New updated interior. Much bigger. What a testiment to the success of this business collective. Proving you can be socially responsible, provide (what I assume is) a living wage, and have enough capital to get ready for the next 20 years.

If you come to Berkeley this is a must visit bakery! The best bread, cheese, olives, scones, muffins, and sweet rolls (outside of Nabolom). Get half bakes or go next store to get some hot pizza!
