Dessert & Spice is a neighborhood bakery at 1941 University Ave in Berkeley, California, where dessert-minded visitors can stop in for pastries, cakes, and drinks in a cozy, comfortable setting. Located near the University Avenue corridor, it is a practical option for Berkeley locals, students, and visitors looking for a sweet break during the day. Customer comments describe an inviting atmosphere and warm counter service, giving the shop the feel of a small place to linger over dessert rather than simply grab and go. With a 4.2 rating from 41 reviews, Dessert & Spice has built a local presence around a varied, review-mentioned dessert selection.

Among the items that stand out in customer feedback is the Dubai pistachio knafeh crocodile, a distinctive dessert one visitor singled out as the one thing to seek out in Berkeley. Reviews also mention tiramisu, caramel cheesecake, fudge cheesecake, Biscoff cheesecake, Biscoff pudding, cream puffs, pastries, and torte, reflecting a menu with several directions for people who prefer classic creamy desserts or something less familiar. A torte was memorable enough for one customer to order it as a birthday cake for a friend, with the result described as a hit at the celebration. Those details make Dessert & Spice worth considering for an everyday treat as well as a small dessert-centered occasion.

The experience is also shaped by the people behind the counter. One visitor calls the cashier especially sweet, while another says the baker answered questions with a smile. A reviewer specifically refers to Maha, the baker, when recounting their birthday-cake order. For customers deciding between pastries or choosing a cake, that kind of approachable interaction can be useful. The reviews describe dessert stops accompanied by chia tea and emphasize the relaxed character of the space, so this Berkeley bakery can suit a quiet catch-up, a casual post-meal sweet, or a stop while exploring the neighborhood. It is a place whose strongest impressions come from its personal service and specific desserts, not a generic bakery experience.

Planning a visit to Dessert & Spice is straightforward: its listed hours begin at noon every day. It is open until 4:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday; until 3:00 p.m. Tuesday; and until 6:00 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The longer late-week and weekend hours may be especially convenient for an afternoon pastry, a dessert run after other Berkeley plans, or picking up something sweet to share. Because offerings and individual preferences can vary, checking in at the counter is a sensible way to ask about the desserts that interest you most. For anyone searching for a bakery in Berkeley, CA, Dessert & Spice offers a cozy setting, recognizable desserts, and customer-noted hospitality at a central University Avenue address.

If you had to come to Berkley to eat just one thing, make it the Dubai pistachios knafeh crocodile from Dessert & Spice! I died and went to heaven and came back! And the lady at the cashier desk was so sweet too!

I don't like to post negative reviews, but I really feel I have to for this place. The strawberry cake tasted old and stale. It had a strange freezer burn type taste to it. The tiramisu was dry and grainy. The cream puffs 100% tasted just like those in tubs sold at Costco and other grocery stores. This place charged 5.99, I think, for 4 pieces. Jesus. We could not believe we'd just spent 20 bucks at this place. Don't waste your money, go somewhere, anywhere, else to get your dessert fix. There are so many other options to choose from. I mean Trader Joe's even.

We have tried a couple of pastries from here and they were both really good. The baker herself is really sweet and answers all questions with a smile. I liked their torte so much that ordered it as a cake for a friend's birthday - it was a hit at the party! Maha, the baker, made the cake a bit taller than torte usually is, added fruits at no extra cost. Highly recommend!
