Dim Sum House by Jane G's - University City is a Chinese restaurant in Philadelphia, PA, at 3939 Chestnut St, on the second floor. It offers a convenient University City option for diners looking for Chinese food and a meal built around ordering several dishes for the table. The experience is described by customers as easy and social: guests receive a paper menu and pencil, mark the dishes they want, and can explore a variety of items without a complicated ordering process. That format can work especially well for friends or family who enjoy sharing and comparing bites.

Customer experiences point to a menu with a range of dishes, including dim sum, barbecued spare ribs, soup, sauteed pea sprouts, and turnip cakes. One diner particularly enjoyed the ribs, describing their flavor as sweet, savory, and seasoned with an Asian spice mix. Another review appreciated the pea sprouts, while other comments offer a reminder that individual dishes and experiences can vary: some guests have found certain items salty or portions smaller than they expected. If you are choosing what to order, consider asking the staff about current preparations and portion sizes, especially when trying a dish for the first time.

The room has a warm, gently dim atmosphere and a lively social hum. Reviewers say it can feel comfortable for a larger group while still offering an intimate mood for a dinner for two. Some guests also describe the restaurant as noisy, so it may be livelier than a quiet, hushed dining room at busy times. The casual paper-menu ordering adds to the relaxed feel and makes it straightforward to select multiple dishes. Sapporo beer is mentioned by a reviewer as an available beverage, though offerings may change.

This University City restaurant may suit diners who want a shared Chinese meal, a casual gathering with friends, or a warm setting for dinner. Its address on Chestnut Street places it in Philadelphia’s University City area, and the second-floor location is useful to keep in mind when planning your visit. Dim Sum House by Jane G's - University City is closed on Mondays. It is open Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and Friday and Saturday from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Checking current hours and menu details before heading over is a practical way to plan, as schedules and dishes can change.

Unless you are craving Chinese food in such a way that is making you really really sad, just don’t. This will make you sadder. The only decent dish was the sautéed pea sprouts but even those were super salty. I’ve never ever seen deep fried turnip cakes and the sticky Ricky was mostly rice with not a lot of filling. The sautéed cucumbers was nothing like the picture in the menu nor have I ever had it prepared this way. I know UPenn is far from Chinatown and you maybe tempted to go here. I don’t recommend it. To top it off service was terrible. I guess on the plus side it wasn’t too expensive. Meh.

The atmosphere hits that sweet spot—there’s an easy, social hum that makes it perfect for a big table of friends, yet the lighting is gently dim and warm enough that a two-person dinner still feels intimate. Conversations don’t get …

Review – Dim Sum House (Philadelphia) Dim Sum House in Philadelphia is a great Chinese restaurant with a fun and efficient way of ordering: you get a paper menu and a pencil, and simply check off what you want. It’s quick, easy, and perfect for trying multiple dishes without any fuss. The food comes out fast and everything we tried was fresh and flavorful. The eggplant with sauce was delicious, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The chow fan (fried rice) was solid, and the pork dumplings were excellent —juicy, well-seasoned, and definitely the highlight of the meal. Prices are very affordable, especially for the quality and portions, making it a great spot for a casual meal with friends or family. 📍 Conclusion: Dim Sum House is a must-visit in Philly if you’re craving authentic Chinese comfort food in a relaxed setting. Great flavors, fast service, and excellent value for money. ⭐ Overall rating: 9/10 🥟 Best: the pork dumplings and eggplant dish. 🍚 Worst: nothing major to point out. 💸 Price: cheap and absolutely worth it.

Some of the soup was tasty but salty that day. I don't want to judge the soup on one experience. I totally enjoyed the barbecued spare ribs. A sweet, savory Asian spice mix and …

The food was good, but the serving size was too small for a Chinese place. Beer is great, but it’s Sapporo beer - hard to make it bad. Also a bit noisy inside.
