Flake Bakery is a bakery at 1298 Beacon St in Brookline, MA, known for focusing on one specialty: freshly made Portuguese pastéis de nata, also called egg tarts. For visitors exploring the Boston area and local residents looking for a warm pastry, this neighborhood stop offers a clear reason to pause: flaky pastry surrounding creamy custard, served warm. Customer reviews describe a balanced, not-too-sweet filling, with some noticing a delicate hint of cinnamon. The simple, focused menu makes Flake Bakery a natural choice when you want to enjoy this particular pastry rather than browse a broad range of baked goods.
The signature pastéis de nata are praised for their buttery, crisp layers and soft custard centers. Reviewers say the pastries come out warm and appreciate seeing staff press dough into pans as they pass the shop. That glimpse of preparation adds a personal touch and helps explain the attention customers notice in the finished pastry. The custard is often described as creamy and gently flavored, while the pastry supplies a light, flaky contrast. If you have tried egg tarts in Portugal, one reviewer found these comparable; if they are new to you, they offer a straightforward introduction to the classic treat.
Flake Bakery also serves coffee, which customers mention as a satisfying match for the custard pastries. The interior is described as cute, though seating is limited, so this may suit a quick pastry-and-coffee stop more than a long café visit. Friendly, welcoming service is another detail in customer feedback. The shop may appeal to pastry fans, people seeking a small dessert, and anyone curious about a specialty baked fresh in view of the storefront. Frozen packs are also available, according to a reviewer, with recipe cards that explain how to reheat them at home.
Located on Beacon Street in Brookline, Flake Bakery is convenient to keep in mind when planning a local food stop near Boston. Its 4.8-star rating from 202 reviews reflects a strong customer response, while individual experiences can naturally vary. The most consistent praise centers on the warm, flaky crust, creamy custard, and the pleasure of eating the pastries soon after they are made. Check the current schedule before visiting: the bakery is closed Monday and open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Its focused specialty makes it an easy choice for a treat to enjoy in the shop or take along.
Whether you are stopping in for one egg tart, pairing a pastry with coffee, or picking up a frozen pack to reheat later, Flake Bakery keeps the experience centered on its signature bake. Customers highlight the contrast between crisp outer layers and a soft, rich filling, along with a sweetness that does not overwhelm. With its Brookline location, welcoming staff, and limited but cozy seating, it is best suited to visitors who value a distinctive pastry and a relaxed, casual stop. For local searches for a bakery in Brookline, MA, it is a specific option for Portuguese-style custard tarts.

If you’re in Boston, you have to stop by Flake Bakery 🤍 They specialize in one thing and one thing only—fresh, authentic pasteis de nata—and WOW… they absolutely nailed it. The pastry was perfectly flaky and buttery, with that warm, creamy custard center that just melts in your mouth. I added a little powdered sugar on top (highly recommend 😍), and they also offer cinnamon on the side if you want that extra traditional touch. And don’t skip the drinks!! I got an iced mocha with whipped cream and it was honestly better than any Dunkin’ or coffee spot I tried in Boston ☕️✨ The bakery itself is so clean, cozy, and thoughtfully designed—such a cute little spot to pop into. And the customer service was just as sweet as the pastries. You can really feel the love and care that goes into everything they serve. Simple menu, done perfectly. I’ll definitely be back 💛
Delightful is the word I would use to describe these egg tarts! The pastry on the outside was light and flaky and the custard had a very balanced flavor and a slight cinnamon taste that I appreciated. You can see the staff pressing the dough into the pan while you walk by and they are served right off a warming plate so they are always fresh. I might be biased due to loving Portuguese egg tarts but no notes, totally worth the stop!
My new favorite spot in Boston! These warm, flakey, buttery custard treats are perfection! The owners were also very friendly and welcoming and you know these are the real deal since one of them is Portuguese. They also offer frozen packs, with cute recipe cards with directions on how to reheat. The reheated pastéis tasted just as good as fresh and will allow you to stock up! With delicious pastéis de nata and a cappuccino I felt like I could experience a taste of Portugal without leaving Boston!
Just as good as the ones I had in Portugal! Delicious coffee as well. Definitely hit the spot! So happy I stumbled upon this store 🫶🏻 …
Crust was very flaky; custard was very creamy (a bit more on the liquidy side) and not too sweet. Very cute interior, but limited seating. Overall a very pleasant experience 👍
