Sign in to reviewI wish I could give Modern Family Dental 6 stars. Dr. Hao Tran and his staff are excellent. I've been coming here for 17 years. Always professional, always great care! Best dentist in all of San Francisco and if you work in the South bay they also have a location in Sunnyvale.
My husband has been going to Modern Family Dental for years. After seeing the wonderful dental care he gets there I switched dentists and now go there as well. Best move. I highly recommended Modern Dental.
I really wanted to like this place because the staff is nice, but wouldn't recommend and definitely will not return. There were just too many red flags during my visit: 1) Dentist called me a few hours before my initial appointment to tell me the scheduler made a mistake and they can't see me. Had to move meeting arounds and reschedule to the following day 2) During the xray, the assistant was touching the computer mouse and other equipment with the same gloves she was putting in my mouth. I had to ask her to change them, which she did nicely, but it made me really uneasy about their sanitation habits 3) They polished my teeth BEFORE the cleaning. Never had it done in this order before. They claimed it helps the dentist see better, but it felt like they were just stalling because the doctor was running late 4) Felt like they were double-booking the dentist. He was late, and ran back and forth between me and another patient. Having assistants pop in to talk about someone else's dental work while the doctor is literally in my mouth was bizarre and unprofessional 5) Not sure if it was because the room is so tight, but instead of hanging the suction tool where it's based, they just draped the tube across my chest like a seatbelt. I’ve never had a dentist do that and felt awkward. He was nice so I'm sure he would've moved it if I asked, but I shouldn't have to? 6) The cherry on top is usually, when you're almost done, fluoride is a polish they brush on/over teeth. Here, it felt like they used a glue gun. It was just a thick, messy line across my teeth that didn't even cover the surface properly. I spent the next few hours pulling white, stringy residue out of my mouth Not the best experience and felt like the folks there just aren't trained properly or experienced in the slightest. If looking for a dentist, I'd look elsewhere
My experience with the new dentist and support staff was excellent. Replacing a crown in a back tooth is difficult, but the procedure was thoroughly explained. They worked to get the best possible outcome for me.
I can’t recommend Dr. Tran, Dr. Polonsky, and the team at Modern Family Dental highly enough. I initially chose them for convenience (close to home, accepted my insurance), but they've earned my loyalty for life. Beyond routine cleanings, they were extraordinary during a dental emergency: handling the urgent extraction of a cracked molar with compassion, clarity, and professionalism. Bunny got me in last-minute, Dr. Polonsky took time to explain every option thoroughly, and Dr. Tran even responded to my panicked emails over the weekend while caring for a newborn. The whole team goes above and beyond: even noticing a small gap at my checkup and proactively adding extra stitches to make recovery smoother. I’ve moved away from the Inner Richmond and still gladly make the long trip back because I wouldn’t trust my dental care to anyone else.
