At Great Taste Bakery & Restaurant, a Chinese restaurant at 63 Beach St in Boston, MA, guests can find Hong Kong-style dim sum alongside familiar Chinese restaurant dishes. Its central Boston location and broad daily schedule make it a practical choice for a meal during the day or evening. The restaurant is open every day of the week, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Its bakery-and-restaurant name also reflects a mix of offerings, with customer comments highlighting dim sum and egg tarts as part of the experience.
Dim sum is a recurring reason diners visit. Reviews mention shu mai and egg tarts, and describe a selection that can make the restaurant a fit for people who like ordering several small dishes to share. One customer found most of the dim sum tasty, while noting that the shu mai was wetter and more delicate than preferred. Another reviewer said egg tarts may not always be freshly made. These comments offer a useful picture for visitors: the menu has familiar dim sum choices, though individual dishes and expectations can vary.
The feedback also points to other options, including Singapore mai fun, veal ribs, sesame chicken, and sweet-and-sour dishes. One family group was seated without a wait and enjoyed the chance to gather, though their meal was described as just okay and the Singapore mai fun as not especially flavorful. A separate takeout order arrived as sweet-and-sour instead of sesame chicken, so it may be helpful to confirm order details when placing a request. Reviews are mixed overall, and the listed rating is 3.9 from 855 reviews; that context can help set expectations without suggesting every visit will be the same.
The dining room is described by customers as small, and lunch can become busy after noon. Some visitors have found the servers attentive, while others characterize the food selection and quality as average compared with other dim sum spots. For a more relaxed visit, consider arriving before the lunchtime rush; for a group, the menu’s shareable dim sum may suit a casual meal together. The available feedback suggests a straightforward neighborhood restaurant rather than a special-occasion destination, with a range of dishes and a compact setting.
Whether you are looking for a dim sum lunch, a Chinese takeout meal, or an egg tart alongside your visit, Great Taste Bakery & Restaurant offers several ways to dine at its Beach Street address. Its daily 8:00 a.m.–9:30 p.m. hours provide flexibility, while recent customer experiences suggest it is best to approach the menu with balanced expectations. Diners who value a convenient Boston location, familiar Hong Kong-style dishes, and the option to share small plates may find it worth considering. Check the order before leaving if you are taking food to go, and plan for a livelier room around midday.

I went there yesterday for a family gathering. We came to enjoy some quality time together and have a good moment. We didn’t have to wait and were seated right away. We ordered some food, and after tasting it, it was just okay. The Singapore mai fun was not very flavorful. I liked the veal ribs with string beans, but they were stingy with the meat it felt more like a plate of string beans than veal. My dad wanted some ginger oil with the soy sauce chicken, but the waitress said they don’t provide that with this dish. I thought that was strange because it’s just a small cup of sauce that we wanted to enjoy with the chicken(if they said they just genuinely doesn't have it we will understand). Or If they had told us there would be an extra charge, we wouldn’t have minded paying. But she simply said no, and judging us which made the atmosphere tense. Instead, they brought out a lot of the different sauce specifically for the chicken. but is a lot(a bowl), so we couldn’t finish the sauce with the chicken. When we were paying, the waitress noticed we didn’t finish the sauce and started mumbling in Cantonese under her breath, which really shocks us. She probably thought we didn’t understand Cantonese. After that, we just wanted to pay and leave. The tip included on the receipt was calculated after tax, and we paid more than 15%, even though the service wasn’t very good. She only checked on us once and never refilled our teapot. Despite that and despite her speaking badly about us we still wanted to be polite and leave a reasonable tip. However, as we were about to leave, she asked for an additional tip. My dad had already calculated and given her enough because our family usually tips based on the amount before tax. The recommended tip amounts at the bottom of the receipt were calculated after tax, and she pointed to those. My dad didn’t want to argue, so we gave her more. We definitely will not be coming back again. I know the restaurant will continue to get new customers, and maybe that’s why they treat people this way because losing one customer doesn’t really affect their revenue.
A great experience to try authentic Hong Kong cuisine. So it didn't knock my socks off but was serviceable for chinese take out. We ordered the sesame chicken but ended up getting sweet and sour instead. Oh well I should expect that maybe I didn't communicate well.
This dim sum restaurant gets packed after 12 pm for lunchtime. Most of the dim sum was tasty, but the shu mai could have been steamed a bit less. The skin fell apart because it was too wet. If you order an egg tart, it won’t be freshly …
It’s a pretty small dim sum place but they make the most out of it! The servers were attentive. As for the food, I thought the selection and quality of the food was average compared to other dim sum places I’ve been to. Nothing that was phenomenal, but nothing that was bad either. I particularly liked the shrimp dumplings. They also had a photo of red bean buns dressed like minions on the wall that we ordered. However, they gave us what I think are egg yolk buns instead, with no minions which was disappointing. Not sure if it was a language barrier or if they messed up our order.
I didn’t want to write this review because I don’t want a crowd to surge to this hidden gem!! …
