Delicious Vietnamese food. Convenient location. street parking available. Ordered the bun rieu and the bun cha Ha Noi with pork. Patties were delicious for both the bun rieu and bun cha. Loooved how many different herbs were given for the bun cha!!! Added some shrimp paste to the bun rieu for more depth to the broth. The menu is huge so I look forward to trying more items! The Vietnamese coffee is strong!!

Hanoi Kitchen in Portland is one of those understated, easy-to-miss spots that ends up delivering a surprisingly memorable experience, both in terms of food and hospitality. From the outside it’s pretty low-key, but once you step in, the attentive staff and especially the friendly owner create an atmosphere that feels warm and personal—almost like being welcomed into a Vietnamese-American household rather than just another restaurant. Went with the Hanoi-style pho, which was the clear standout. The broth had a deep, slow-simmered richness, and what really set it apart was the layer of beef fat rising to the top, giving each sip a smooth, almost sensual quality. It’s the kind of bowl that you don’t rush through—you take your time with it because the flavor keeps building. Definitely a step above your average pho in terms of depth and overall experience. Also ordered a grilled pork chop with rice to go, and it held up impressively well even outside the restaurant. The pork had a solid Maillard reaction going on—nicely caramelized on the outside with that slightly smoky, savory edge—while still remaining flavorful throughout. The rice, pickled vegetables, and fresh components balanced everything out, so you get that classic contrast of rich, tangy, and refreshing in each bite. It’s a well-composed dish that shows attention to detail. Another thing worth mentioning is the consistency in how everything is put together. Nothing felt rushed or thrown on the plate—there’s a clear intention behind the flavors and presentation, even for a to-go order. That kind of care goes a long way. Only slight drawback is that the exterior and overall setup are pretty modest, so it’s easy to overlook if you’re just passing by. Seating can also feel a bit limited during busier times, which speaks to its popularity. Overall, highly recommended if you’re looking for authentic, thoughtfully prepared Vietnamese food with a personal touch. Between the standout pho, well-executed grilled dishes, and genuinely welcoming service, it’s definitely a place worth going out of your way for—and one I’d come back to without hesitation.
