Happy Bamboo (Vietnamese Pho & Grill) is a Vietnamese restaurant in Portland, Oregon, at 18305 NW West Union Rd Ste D, Portland, OR 97229. It offers a relaxed, modest setting for enjoying familiar Vietnamese dishes, whether you are stopping in for lunch, meeting someone for a casual meal, or looking for a comforting bowl of pho. Customer feedback highlights attentive service and food with a balance of Vietnamese flavors. The restaurant is rated 4.8 stars from 257 reviews, though individual experiences can vary, as they do at any restaurant.

Pho is a central draw at Happy Bamboo. Reviewers mention the Special Pho and brisket and beef pho, describing the broth as rich and praising the option to add tendon. Fresh sprouts and basil are also noted as generous accompaniments, giving diners a way to tailor each bowl. For a lighter start or something to share, fresh spring rolls appear among the dishes customers have enjoyed. These specific favorites make Happy Bamboo a useful choice for guests seeking a traditional pho-focused meal in northwest Portland, as well as for people exploring Vietnamese food for the first time.

The grill brings another set of well-liked options. Grilled lemongrass chicken over vermicelli is a standout in customer comments, appreciated for its savory flavor and careful cooking. The menu also features Vietnamese iced coffee, which reviewers describe as rich and delicious. Together, these choices suit diners who want something beyond soup, including guests looking for a satisfying lunch or a casual dinner. Feedback also describes the decor and atmosphere as modest, with Vietnamese touches rather than a formal setting. That straightforward feel can work well for an informal meal, while the range of pho and grilled dishes gives a group a few different ways to order.

Happy Bamboo is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday through Sunday, and is closed Tuesday. If you are planning a larger takeaway order, especially for a gathering, call ahead: one reviewer noted that a substantial order of lemongrass chicken took an estimated 30 to 40 minutes to prepare after ordering. Most customer feedback is positive about the food and service, but one diner reported seeing flies in the restaurant and feeling concerned about the dining environment. That feedback is worth keeping in mind alongside the favorable reviews. For Portland diners searching for Vietnamese pho, lemongrass chicken, fresh spring rolls, or Vietnamese iced coffee, Happy Bamboo offers a neighborhood option at its NW West Union Road address.

A hole-in-a-wall place with good food and service in a modest Vietnamese decor and ambiance! We had Fresh Spring Roll, Special Phő, and Grilled Lemongrass Chicken over vermicelli. Overall, quite tasty food with a good balance of unique Vietnamese flavors with a minimal hint of MSG, if at all. Generous portion for all three items we ordered including accommodation of additional requests of sides (bean sprouts for the phŏ. Courteous and attentive service including not charging for the oolong tea. It was interesting to see a piano in the rear of the restaurant, perhaps for larger group parties. Recommended! The service was quit

My hubs comes here weekly now for lunch. We had such a great experience here! The lemongrass chicken was definitely a standout—so flavorful and perfectly cooked. The brisket and beef pho was, honestly, pho-nomenal (had to say it 😄). The Vietnamese iced coffee was rich, delicious, and gave me the perfect boost. Service was fantastic—friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Everything felt clean and well cared for, including the restrooms. Even the aroma when you walk in is amazing—just that warm, inviting, “you know the food’s going to be good” kind of smell. We’ll definitely be back!

I wanted a big order a lot of lemongrass chicken for a dinner party thinking I can pick it up as soon as I got to the restaurant. Unfortunately I forgot to call it in early so when I did, I didn’t realize it would take 30-40 min. to prepare and it would be too late for my dinner. So I said no thank you and hung up, scrambling for an alternative. The owner called me back a min. later and said he can accommodate my order in 20 min. if that’s okay. I immediately headed there and picked up within 20 min. I got home just as everyone started eating dinner. My family enjoyed the chicken…no leftovers from Happy Bamboo. I appreciated that the owner was willing to go the extra mile when I messed up.

The food was good, and I enjoyed the meal. However, the experience was seriously affected by the number of flies throughout the restaurant. Seeing flies around the dining area was concerning and made the environment feel unsanitary. I’ve attached photos showing what I observed during my visit.

Hands down favorite pho spot in Portland… the price is great, the broth is rich, they offer tendon, they are not stingy with their sprouts and basil, family business. Check them out if you like pho.
