About

Hong Kong Bakery Shop is listed on FindALoco in Philadelphia, PA with address, phone, hours, and map location. Common services and related keywords include Bakery.

Hong Kong Bakery Shop is a bakery at 917 Race St in Philadelphia, PA 19107. Its menu, as reflected in customer accounts, goes beyond sweet pastries: visitors mention Chinese buns, custard buns, red bean buns, chicken dumplings, and house fried noodles. That mix may appeal to people looking for a quick bakery stop as well as travelers or nearby diners hoping to pick up savory food. If you are exploring the Race Street area, the shop is an option to consider for a casual, convenient bite rather than a place to visit for a guaranteed signature experience.

Customer reviews describe a range of experiences with the food. Some visitors enjoyed the chicken dumplings and house fried noodles, and one traveler appreciated being able to take savory buns along for breakfast. Other customers were disappointed by the bao and buns, mentioning dry bread, firm or unevenly distributed red bean filling, and a custard bun with very little filling. These comments suggest that quality and satisfaction have not been consistent for every guest. If you have a particular item in mind, it may be useful to ask what is freshly available before ordering, especially when choosing filled buns.

Hong Kong Bakery Shop has a 3.2-star rating from 118 reviews, so it is worth approaching with realistic expectations and checking recent feedback if food quality is a priority. One review also raised concerns about added service and card charges. Since fees and payment terms can change, confirm the total at the counter before paying, particularly if you plan to use a card. Sharing this information plainly can help visitors make an informed choice and avoid surprises.

The posted hours make the shop a possible stop at different times of day, including later in the evening: Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.; Friday and Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.; and Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. Hours may change, so it is sensible to verify them before making a special trip. For Philadelphia visitors and locals alike, Hong Kong Bakery Shop offers a broad mix of buns and savory items at a Race Street address, with customer feedback that is notably mixed. Go with an open mind, check item availability and charges, and choose what suits your plans that day.

Sad to be writing this review because I want to support Chinatown small businesses, but they need to step it up if they want to survive. The baos here are the worst I have ever had - and I’ve gotten baos from Chinese bakeries up and down the east coast and I don’t recall ever being so disappointed in what I thought was a pretty simple and common item. The roast pork bao barely had any filling, it was mostly bao and air. The custard bun was the same - except the flavor of the custard was not nearly sweet enough, barely had custard flavor, and was an odd, flat non-creamy texture. Didn’t even bother wasting my calories for this Despite having a craving for bao when I stepped in to buy it. The egg tart I got also was not filled enough (top was concaved) and the crust was lackluster. Will not be returning.

Charges 20% service fee on top of the after tax (10% tax!) amount and another 10% card fee. I thought this place would be a bargain but turned out to be a scam. I am definitely not going back to this place

We were visiting Philadelphia from Los Angeles and decided to stop by—and we’re so glad we did. We ordered the chicken dumplings and house fried noodles, and both were absolutely delicious—perfect for dinner after a long day of exploring. Before leaving, we also grabbed a few savory buns for breakfast the next morning, and they were just as great. They had an amazing variety of buns and sweets, and everything looked fresh and tempting (about $3 each). Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Philly!

The custard bun is almost empty! There’s one milligram custard filled in the bun. We are never coming back! The quality of hong kong bakery went downhill. Our friends were saying the same! Bye bye

I bought some chinese bun here fews days ago, and it was not the best I ever eaten. They were dry, the filling ( red bean) was hard and not melted. Also, it was only in the center, so it was not soft at all. …
