Mei Sum Bakery is a neighborhood bakery at 36 Beach St in Boston, MA, in the city’s Chinatown. Open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., it offers a convenient stop for breakfast, a quick lunch, or something to take away. The menu described by customers extends beyond baked goods to include familiar Chinese bakery and cafe favorites, savory snacks, rice rolls, congee, and banh mi. With a 4.0-star rating across 121 reviews, Mei Sum Bakery has drawn both longtime regulars and visitors looking for a casual, practical meal in Chinatown.

Customers mention a varied selection of items to consider, including egg tarts, pork buns, sesame rice balls, shrimp rice rolls, and youtiao. One longtime customer particularly enjoys bao filled with pork, sausage, and egg, and also recommends the congee with thousand-year egg. Other reviews mention pork and beef banh mi, with tofu available as a protein option, as well as milk tea. These firsthand comments offer a helpful sense of the range, but individual preferences differ: some customers praise their sandwiches as fresh, filling, and flavorful, while others have been disappointed by particular snacks or drinks. If you are trying something unfamiliar, asking about the filling or style before ordering may help you choose what suits you.

The atmosphere sounds informal and personal. A regular recalls being greeted warmly by an older staff member who asks how they are doing, while another customer appreciated the pleasant service. This is the kind of place customers describe returning to for familiar favorites or picking up food to go, rather than a destination that requires a special occasion. Reviews also note that some items may be handed over from prepared selections, and experiences with freshness and consistency vary. Reading those details alongside the positive comments can help set realistic expectations: the menu has appealing options for a quick Chinatown stop, but a particular item may not be to everyone’s taste.

For a simple meal or snack in Boston Chinatown, Mei Sum Bakery may suit people who want choices such as a pork, beef, or tofu banh mi, a filled bao, congee, an egg tart, or a rice roll. It may also be useful for a takeout breakfast or lunch, with posted hours running every day of the week. The customer feedback is mixed in specific ways: several reviewers value the friendly interactions and return visits, while others describe problems with temperature, flavor, or freshness on the items they ordered. That variety makes the reviews most useful as a guide to individual dishes, not as a promise that every visit will be the same. Find it at 36 Beach St and consider asking staff about the available fillings and prepared items when you arrive.

Would avoid. Youtiao was cold, luckily it tasted ok since it was probably cooked today, and soya bean drink tasted so strange I had 2 mouths and threw it all away. Nice Asian elderly aunties treat you as nice as they can be.

Sesame rice balls inside was so weird?? I mean maybe I should’ve asked for red beans and this is a salty version I didn’t know existed??? But it was bad. The service was nice and outside of bun was fine but I do not recommend this salty paste version they did of the red bean sesame bun. $6.8 for 4 balls

Used to go here years ago, and chose this place for a lunch takeout. Went around the afternoon, while not expecting the freshest quality this wasn't half the the quality I remember. For a box of 6 egg tarts and 1 shrimp rice roll, it costed 14.25. I am accepted the pre-made boxes the teller handed me, and looking at a glance they seem fine. The noodles are rice shrimp rolls that are suppose to be slippery, but mine were rubbery and had a small tang as if the noodles were slightly off. Non-confirmed, but usually that indicates a dish prepared the previous day. Which can be a concern when the shrimp are wrapped inside them. The 6 egg tarts are just the slightest bit of sweet, and are soft. The crust can get a bit oily so have a napkin on hand. No complaints for these. Guess if you want anything else though with the eggtarts go else where. Edit: Had 6 egg tarts, shared 1 and both of us had bad bowel movements. This was the last thing I ate and I hadn't even 3 hours before hand.

Been coming here for years and the old lady always ask how I’m doing and miss seeing me . They have the best bao with pork , sausage and eggs inside . I usually ordered 10 to go sometimes. Their congee is also good with a thousand years egg …

I would rather come here for a $6 bahn mi than go to Panera a $12 sandwich. Apparently it’s the longest standing bahn mi shop in Chinatown. I have come here twice for pork and beef bahn mi (they also have tofu for protein) and both were nothing but fresh, filling, and flavorful. Add milk tea & sweet rice donut for an extra dollar and you have a whole meal. Pretty good deal! PS there is usually a long piece of cucumber in the sandwich. No cucumber in the photos because I asked them to take it out.
