Pork rice is another standout in customer feedback, with diners noting its well-seasoned meat and generous large portion. For anyone looking for a focused meal rather than an expansive menu, this downtown spot keeps its selection limited and does its specialties well.
The signature chicken rice is a natural choice for a first visit, especially if you enjoy comforting food with savory depth. Reviews describe chicken that is tender enough to nearly melt in the mouth, paired with rice that is rich and aromatic. Pork rice offers a satisfying alternative, and customers have also mentioned adding chicken skin to a large khao man gai order. The dishes are described as full of flavor, so this is a place for diners who appreciate a bold, savory meal. Portions may be especially appealing if you choose the large size.
The restaurant is small, with much of the seating described as bar stools, giving the space an informal, compact feel. Ordering is available at a self-service kiosk, and customers report that food can arrive quickly; one weekday lunch party said its order was ready at the table in about 11 minutes. That makes Nong's a practical option for a downtown lunch, a fast bite, or a casual meal when you do not need a large dining room or a long menu. Reviewers also mention complimentary ginger hot tea, a soothing extra on a chilly day.
Nong's Khao Man Gai (Downtown) is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday, making it possible to stop in beyond the typical lunch window. If you are exploring Thai food in downtown Portland and want a straightforward, quick-service meal built around a few well-loved rice dishes, this compact restaurant is worth considering. The pork rice was absolutely delicious and full of flavor! The meat was perfectly seasoned and incredibly tasty. If you order the large portion, the serving size is very generous! The chicken rice was also really good, but the pork rice was definitely my favorite. Everything tasted so authentic. Highly recommend the pork rice!
Nong’s Khao Man Gai completely exceeded my expectations! This was easily one of the best meals I had in Portland, and I already can’t wait to come back. The chicken rice is absolutely phenomenal. The chicken is incredibly juicy, tender, and full of flavor, while the rice is rich, fragrant, and cooked to perfection. Every bite paired with their signature sauce is pure comfort food heaven. But the real star for me was the crispy chicken skin—OH. MY. GOODNESS. It was unbelievably crispy, light, and packed with savory flavor. I honestly could have eaten several orders of it by myself! If you visit, do yourself a favor and don’t skip it. The service was fast, the staff was friendly, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. It’s rare to find a restaurant that does something so simple yet executes it flawlessly. I can absolutely see why Nong’s Khao Man Gai has such an amazing reputation. Without a doubt, this is a 5-star experience. If you’re in Portland, this place is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be coming back every chance I get!
Small store offering excellent Thai food. Great for lunch and fast bites. The restaurant is quite small and most seats are by bar stools. They offer free ginger hot tea, which is a soothing experience in cold winter time. The food comes out pretty fast after ordering. The steamed chicken dish is excellent. The chicken is very tender and juicy, with its original flavor. The rice serving with the chicken is moisture. It tastes like steamed with chicken broth. The price is very reasonable. I will definitely come here again.
Excellent, hole in the wall, Thai. Limited selection, but what they have, they do quite well. Easy to order at kiosk. Party of 3 on weekday for lunch took 11 minutes from order to ready at table. Chicken almost melts in the mouth. …
It was empty when I walked in, until a group of people surged in around 1:30pm-ish on a Monday. Self-kiosk ordering, I got a large khao man gai with chicken skin. I’m not complaining for the price I get but every aspect of the food felt super powerful. Soup had a strong fish sauce saltiness and umami, sauce zinged with strong brightness. Chicken was a very slightly tough but it was delicious overall. Great quick-bite in downtown!
