If you are looking for a reliable Asian restaurant in San Francisco, CA, Papa’s kitchen is a neighborhood spot worth knowing. Located at 1705 Haight St in San Francisco, the restaurant has built a steady local following, reflected in its 4.3 rating from 237 reviews. Guests often describe it as a comfortable place for a casual meal, with quick service, fair prices, and a clean dining room. For people exploring the Haight area or searching for everyday Asian dining in the city, this is the kind of place that feels approachable and easy to return to.

One of the strongest impressions from customer feedback is the variety of flavorful dishes that keep diners coming back. Reviews specifically praise the sugar cane fried prawns, pork and shrimp egg rolls, combo pho, dry cooked Meiji prawns, and ox tail hot pot. These dishes suggest a menu that balances comforting soups, crispy appetizers, and richer house specialties. The combo pho, in particular, stands out as a frequent point of discussion, while the ox tail hot pot is described as especially comforting and delicious. If you enjoy meals that feel hearty, savory, and satisfying, Papa’s kitchen seems to resonate with that kind of diner.

Beyond the food, Papa’s kitchen appears to offer the kind of service many local diners appreciate: attentive, friendly, and fast without feeling rushed. One reviewer mentioned arriving on a rainy Thursday and finding plenty of seating, quick service, and a clean space, all of which matter when choosing a restaurant for lunch, dinner, or a relaxed meal with friends or family. Another customer highlighted the kindness of the owner, sharing a positive experience around a special request. These details help paint a picture of a business that values hospitality and neighborhood relationships, not just turnover.

Like many well-frequented local restaurants, experiences can vary depending on what you order. While several dishes earn strong praise, one reviewer noted that the orange chicken was not a favorite, and another shared disappointment about a change to the combo pho. That kind of feedback can actually be helpful for new visitors, giving a more grounded sense of what regulars notice and care about. Overall, the most consistently praised choices seem to be the prawns, egg rolls, pho, and hot pot.

The meal was fantastic. We tried the sugar cane fried prawns, pork and shrimp egg rolls, combo pho, and dry cooked Meiji prawns, and everything was full of flavor. The order arrived quickly, the service was attentive, and the prices felt very fair. A solid five star experience.

I came on a rainy Thursday. Plenty of seating, clean, and quick friendly service. The food is good for the price especially. No hot tea though, I hope they get that in the future ;)

Do not order the orange chicken. I love garlic but the flavour doesn’t go with orange chicken, especially when you have so much of it. The pieces of garlic were crazy big and crunchy. Good if it has been a garlic chicken, minus the orange. The chicken was also nice white meat but it was dry. On the other hand the basil chicken was good and came with lots of veggies. I thought the veggie spring rolls were going to be fresh but they were fried. For fried, not my favourite but they’ll hit the spot if you’re in the mood.

Ox tail hot pot here is so comforting and delicious! The boss lady is super nice too, she let me order the lamb version of this on a previous visit even though it was no longer a part of the menu :) (note: the dish came with more oxtail and tofu. I took the pic after eating a bit)

Have to take off a star personally because they no longer include the bone in their combo pho! 😢 It was my favourite thing about their pho, I loved chewing the meat off the bone! I asked if I could specifically get the bone but was told they stopped doing it because a customer complained - it hurt their teeth or something? 😕 Really sad because the pieces they put in the pho don't contain the same amount of fattiness. The pho is fine otherwise, and my partner likes their orange chicken, but the bone was really the main reason I kept coming back.
