The star of the show is undoubtedly the legendary burnt almond cake. Ask anyone in San Jose what brings them back to Peters' Bakery, and the answer is almost always the same: that perfectly toasted almond topping layered over rich, moist cake that somehow manages to be both indulgent and irresistible. It is the kind of dessert that lingers in your memory long after the last bite, and the bakery knows it—customers line up early, sometimes before the doors even open at 6:30 AM, just to make sure they get their hands on one. Beyond the signature cake, the menu features an impressive selection of cream puffs, sponge orange cake, eclairs, and banana walnut loaf, each crafted with the same attention to flavor and texture that defines everything here.
One of the things customers appreciate most about Peters' Bakery is the affordability. In a region where specialty bakeries can charge premium prices, this spot keeps things reasonable without cutting corners on quality. There is a $10 minimum for credit card purchases, which is a good excuse to grab an extra pastry or two. Street parking is plentiful along Alum Rock Ave, making it easy to pop in even during busy hours—though it is worth noting that the bakery does get crowded, especially on weekend mornings when the neighborhood comes out in full force.
The atmosphere at Peters' Bakery is best described as no-frills and on-the-go. This is not the place to settle in for a long afternoon with a book; it is a grab-your-bag-and-go kind of spot where the focus is squarely on the food. The staff keeps things moving efficiently, and their friendliness adds a personal touch that makes every visit feel warm and genuine. For those planning ahead, note that the bakery is closed on Mondays and Sundays, operating Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM. It is an ideal stop for picking up a show-stopping dessert for a birthday, holiday gathering, or any special occasion that deserves something truly delicious.

Sign in to reviewIf you’re not familiar with this bakery yet, it probably means you haven’t tasted their legendary almond cake. The name might slip your mind, but the flavor never does—and honestly, they know exactly which cake everyone comes in for. That perfectly toasted almond topping and rich, indulgent layers have earned this place its reputation for a reason. One bite explains the hype better than any description ever could. It’s the kind of dessert people talk about long after it’s gone, and once you’ve tried it, you’ll understand why this bakery is so well known.
A very delicious and fluffy burnt almond cake! I came very close to open and there was already a line of multiple people. Prices are reasonable too. Plenty of street parking. $10 minimum for credit card so I also picked up a banana walnut loaf! I cannot wait to try the other pastries too. No indoor seating area or coffee though, unfortunately!
Loved this place! My favorite are the cream puff, sponge orange cake and eclairs. Definitely worth the visit! Can get crowded depending on the time of day. Everything is on the go and indoor dining.
Amazing desserts, not just for the holidays, but for every special occasion. Burnt almond cake is everything! And the $$ is actually affordable compared to some of the other bakeries
I was really looking forward to trying this bakery since it’s such a local favorite, but unfortunately my experience didn’t live up to the hype. On a positive note, the service was great. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere, however, could use some improvement — it didn’t feel as polished or inviting as I expected. The biggest disappointment was the cake. It was extremely dry and completely crumbled when sliced. The flavor was very bland, and the frosting was unpleasant and overwhelming rather than complementary. It made the cake difficult to enjoy. I also purchased a berry pie with a custard filling, which unfortunately was just as disappointing. The filling lacked balance and didn’t taste fresh, and the overall texture was unappealing. Given the bakery’s reputation, I expected much better quality. I hope this was just an off day, but based on this visit, I wouldn’t return for these items.
