Portland VA Medical Center is a veterans hospital in Portland, OR, located at 3710 SW US Veterans Hospital Rd, Portland, OR 97239, United States. It is a local care destination for veterans and their families seeking medical support in the Portland area. Public feedback reflects a range of experiences: the center has a 3.6-star rating from 426 reviews. Some reviewers describe attentive, compassionate care, while others mention difficulty with scheduling or appointment availability. That mix makes it useful to contact the center directly about current services, referrals, and appointment options before planning a visit.

Reviews call out several areas of care, including neurosurgery, oncology, eye appointments, pharmacy services, and ongoing care for complex health needs. One patient praised the neurosurgical team for communication, planning, and attentive support during an inpatient stay, emphasizing that staff understood the patient’s situation and made them feel recognized. Another reviewer described receiving care over many years after returning from military service. These accounts suggest that some patients value continuity and personal attention, though individual experiences can differ. The available information does not specify a complete service list, so patients should confirm whether a particular specialty or service is available and how to access it.

Oncology receives especially warm mentions in the supplied reviews, with patients describing doctors and nurses as kind, caring, and enjoyable to work with. Other reviews recount family members receiving care for diabetes and serious foot complications, and describe appreciation for the doctors’ efforts over time. Pharmacy is also mentioned, including a reviewer’s view that the service had improved after earlier inefficiencies. Together, these comments offer a more concrete picture of the center than a general description alone: people discuss both the clinical teams and practical parts of navigating care. They are personal reports, not a guarantee of what another patient will experience.

For veterans comparing care options, and for spouses or relatives helping coordinate appointments, Portland VA Medical Center may be relevant when seeking the specialties and ongoing care mentioned in patient feedback. The reviews also point to a practical consideration: appointment changes and limited availability can be frustrating, with one reviewer describing a cancelled eye visit and a lengthy wait to reschedule. Ask about scheduling, referral requirements, and alternatives if an appointment changes. Hours are not listed in the available business information, so verify current hours and visit details directly before traveling to the SW US Veterans Hospital Road address. Clear expectations can help patients and families plan their next steps.

I have had an exceptional experience. The neurosurgical dept have absolutely set a bar when it comes to communication and planning and CARE! my in-stay experience has made it impossible to ever go to any other hospital. The docs made me feel like I MATTERED. They knew my name my entire situation and how to be help me heal and stay well. My nurses were all absolute sunshine. I feel BLESSED. The entire process for my situation was great. I think the worst was the ER it felt cold and very impersonal at first, but once neuro got involved, I felt like I literally was a stand alone important person!

I've been going here since I came back all busted up from the war 15 years ago. They've always taken good care of me, I've never had a bad experience. The pharmacy has gotten better over the years it used to be a little inefficient but it's …

Ok Portland VA you win, we give up. My wife and I flew in for eye appointments today, and we were called at the last second that our appointments were cancelled. Tried to reschedule and this whole area is booked out for months. Sent to “community care” line to see about getting an appointment, and 3 hours, and 6 runarounds later, still no referral or appointment. We give up. You guys are as bad as the Phoenix VA system before Trump. Please do better.
